THE DOCTRINE OF THE HOLY SPIRIT

MENTION OF THE HOLY SPIRIT IN THE EPISTLE TO THE ROMANS

1. He is called “the Spirit of holiness” (Romans 1:4)

a) Characterised by holiness
b) He is elsewhere called “The Holy Spirit” (John 14:26)
c) He is essentially “spirit” (no physical entity)

2. He was involved in the resurrection of the Lord Jesus Christ (Romans 1:4)

a) God raised Jesus from the dead
b) The Holy Spirit is instrumental in this matter

3. He is the One described as the Person through whom the love of God is poured out (Romans 5:5)

a) God loves the world
b) This love is especially poured out and experienced by the believer
c) The Holy Spirit is once again instrumental in the outpouring of God’s love

ESSENTIAL KNOWLEDGE ABOUT THE HOLY SPIRIT
(Teaching of the Lord Jesus Christ)

1. He is the Helper (Comforter) for whom Jesus prayed (John 14:16; 16:7)

2. He will abide with believers forever (John 14:16)

3. He is called “The Spirit of truth” (John 14:17; 15:26; 16:13)

4. He will indwell every believer (John 14:17)

5. He is also called “The Holy Spirit” (John 14:26)

6. He will teach believers (John 14:26)

7. He will enable believers to remember (John 14:26)

8. He will testify of the Lord Jesus (John 15:26)

9. His ministry in the world (John 16:7-11)

a) He will convict the world of sin
b) Of righteousness
c) Of judgment

10. He will guide into all truth (John 16:13)

11. He will not speak on His own authority (John 16:13)

12. He will speak of things to come (John 16:13)

13. He will glorify the Lord Jesus Christ (John 16:14)

14. He will declare the Lord Jesus Christ (John 16:14)

VITAL CHALLENGES

1. To understand this doctrine well

2. To apply this doctrine in one’s life meaningfully

3. To seek to be filled with the power of the Spirit of God
