Message Notes

TRAGIC CIRCUMSTANCES

1. The Babylonians had laid siege on Jerusalem   (Jeremiah 32:2)

2. King Zedekiah had thrown Jeremiah into jail for preaching the fall of Judah and Jerusalem   (Jeremiah 32:2-4)

PROFOUND WAYS OF GOD

1. Jeremiah was told to buy land   (Jeremiah 32:6-15)

When many were selling their lands because of war

2. Jeremiah obeyed but was deeply puzzled   (Jeremiah 32:25)

The land was under siege! Why purchase land?

THE PRAYER OF JEREMIAH

1. Great formality in this prayer

2. Addressing God formally

a) The Lord is addressed as the Creator of heaven and earth   (Jeremiah 32:17)
b) He is indeed “The Great, the Mighty God, whose name is the LORD of hosts”   (Jeremiah 32:18)
c) Extolling the virtues of God ( great in counsel and mighty in work)
(Jeremiah 32:19)
d) Honouring the name of God   (Jeremiah 32:20)

3. Recalling what God had done for His people

a) He brought the people out of Egypt   (Jeremiah 32:21)
b) He had given the land of Canaan   (Jeremiah 32:22)

4. Acknowledgement of sin on the part of Israel

a) They had not obeyed the vice of God   (Jeremiah 32:23)
b) They had not walked in God’s laws   (Jeremiah 32:23)
c) Hence they had been chastised by God   (Jeremiah 32:23)

5. Raising of a question to God

a) Why purchase land?
b) When the enemy had laid siege on Jerusalem?   (Jeremiah 32:24-25)

THE ANSWER FROM THE LORD

1. His reply

“I am the LORD, the God of all flesh”   (Jeremiah 32:26)

2. His query

“Is there anything too hard for Me?”   (Jeremiah 32:26)

3. God’s word of explanation concerning the present

a) The city of Jerusalem will fall   (Jeremiah 32:29)
b) Because of the sinful ways of His people   (Jeremiah 32:30-36)

4. God’s word of explanation concerning the future

a) He will gather His people back to the land   (Jeremiah 32:37)
b) They will be His people and He will be their God (Jeremiah 32:38)
c) He will give them one heart and one way (Jeremiah 32:39)
d) He will give them an everlasting (New) Covenant (Jeremiah 32:40)
e) He will rejoice over them (Jeremiah 32:41)
f) He will bless His people with goodness (Jeremiah 32:42)
g) People will then seek to purchase land (Jeremiah 32:43-44)
(But the cost of land then would be very high)
