THE OLD TESTAMENT LEVITICAL PRIESTHOOD

1. The tribe of Levi Not numbered with the rest of the tribes of Israel   (Numbers 1:47-49)

a) Aaronic priesthood
i) Anointed as priests   (Numbers 3:3)
ii) Consecrated to minister as priests   (Numbers 3:3)
b) The Levitical priesthood
i) Levites to be separated   (Numbers 8:14)
ii) All firstborn belong to the Lord   (Numbers 8:17)
iii) The Levites take the place of the firstborn   (Numbers 8:18)
iv) They assist the Aaronic priesthood   (Numbers 8:19)

THE FUTURE PRIESTS OF THE LORD

1. They will be called “priests of the LORD”   (Isaiah 61:6)

2. They will also be called “servants of our God”   (Isaiah 61:6)

THE ROYAL PRIESTHOOD IN THE NEW COVENANT

1. A chosen generation   (1 Peter 2:9)

2. A holy nation   (1 Peter 2:9)

3. A royal priesthood   (1 Peter 2:9)

4. His own special people   (1 Peter 2:9)

5. Made us kings and priests   (Revelation 1:6)

WHEN DID THESE THINGS BEGIN TO TAKE PLACE?

1. When the Lord Jesus ushered in the New Covenant   (Matthew 26:28)

a) Through His authority
b) Through His death

2. What are the features of the New Order?

a) Differences to the Old Covenant
i) Not restricted to the Levitical covenant
ii) Not restricted to the Tabernacle/ temple ministry
b) Similarities
i) Consecrated by the Lord
ii) Committed to be the servants of the Lord
iii) Committed to offering praise to the Lord in worship and service

APPROPRIATE RESPONSES

1. Challenge to understand our call to be servants of the Lord

2. Commitment to serve the Lord faithfully

3. Consecration of our heart and mind to serve the Lord significantly
