THE DIVINE PLAN OF GOD CONCERNING THE PENALTY OF SIN

“The Lord has laid on Him the iniquity of us all.”   Isaiah 53:6

1. God’s plan was to lay the penalty on Christ

a) The penalty should have been laid on us
b) God’s plan was to relieve us of bearing that penalty
c) It was placed on the Lord Jesus instead

2. The plan pleased the Lord

“Yet it pleased the Lord to bruise Him: He put him to grief. When You make His soul an offering for sin.”   Isaiah 53:10
a) It was not that God took pleasure in Christ’s suffering
b) It means that God was propitiated
i) God as a Holy God demanded justice that must be served

ONLY CHRIST COULD BE THE SIN BEARING SERVANT OF THE LORD AND BRING ABOUT JUSTIFICATION

1. Only Christ could bear the sins of the world

“The Lord has laid on Him the iniquity of us all.”   Isaiah 53:6
a) He vicariously bore all of our iniquities on our behalf
b) He took our place in paying the price of all our sin

2. Only Christ the righteous Servant could justify

“By His knowledge My righteous Servant shall justify many, for He shall bear their iniquities.”   Isaiah 53:11
a) He had knowledge as to what His purpose was
b) In His righteousness, Christ was the only one who was able to justify many by bearing our iniquities

3. Only Christ would love us so much to bear our sins
