Focus: To appreciate and exalt a great and holy God

BACKGROUND OF PSALM 99

1. A call from the Psalmist to exalt God

2. The Psalmist sought to accord God with the place and honor He rightly deserves

WHO GOD IS

1. He is very great

a. The mightiest angels (cherubim) attend to Him
b. He reigns as King and is high above all the peoples
c. His name is great and awesome
“He dwells between the cherubim…”   Psalm 99:1

2. He is to be feared

a. There ought to be a right regard for God
b. There ought to be the fear of the LORD
“Let the peoples tremble…”   Psalm 99:1

THE WORKS OF GOD

1. The works of God are expressions of who God is

2. He loves justice

3. He has established equity, and executed justice and righteousness

“You have executed justice and righteousness…”   Psalm 99:4

THE SERVANTS OF GOD

1. Outstanding servants highlighted – Moses, Aaron, Samuel

2. These were among those who served God

3. He is a God that is deserving of outstanding servants and service

“Moses and Aaron were among His priests, and Samuel was among those who called upon His name”   Psalm 99:6

HOW GOD RELATES TO US

1. He is not unapproachable

a. He hears and answers us
b. He speaks to us

2. He forgives

a. Even though we are sinful
b. He is “God-Who-Forgives”
“You were to them God-Who-Forgives…”   Psalm 99:8

RESPONDING APPROPRIATELY TO GOD

1. To recognize that He is holy

a. He is set apart
b. There is none like Him
“He is holy…”   Psalm 99:3, 5, 9

2. To exalt Him

a. In praise and worship
b. To accord Him the place and honor He rightly deserves
“Exalt the LORD our God…”   Psalm 99:5, 9
