Text: John 7:25-31

Subject: Evangelism

Focus: “Divided Opinions”

INTRODUCTION

1. A major Jewish Feast in Jerusalem (Tabernacles)

2. The Jews were seeking to arrest the Lord Jesus

3. The Lord Jesus turned up at the Temple teaching (John 7:14)

a) Much to the surprise of the Jews
b) Also, to their consternation

DIVIDED OPINIONS

1. Lots of complaining (John 7:12a)

2. Some said, “He is good” (John 7:12b)

3. Others said, “No, on the contrary, He deceives the people” (John 7:12c)

4. “How does this Man know letters, having never studied?” (John 7:15)

FURTHER OPINIONS IN JERUSALEM

1. Some from Jerusalem (John 7:25a)

2. Their opinions expressed

a) Identification of the Lord Jesus
“Is this not He whom they seek to kill?” John 7:25b
b) The boldness of the Lord Jesus
“But look! He speaks boldly, and they say nothing to Him” John 7:26a
c) Querying the rulers
“Do the rulers know indeed that this is truly the Christ?” John 7:26b
d) Confused ideas about the Origin of the Messiah
“However, we know where this Man is from; but when the Christ comes, no one knows where He is from” John 7:27

THE RESPONSE OF THE LORD JESUS CHRIST

1. He was at the Temple teaching (John 7:28a)

a) Basic Knowledge of the Lord Jesus
“You both know Me, and you know where I am from” John 7:28b
i) He was born in Bethlehem
ii) He grew up in Nazareth
iii) His father was Joseph, a carpenter
This basic knowledge is insufficient!
b) Deeper knowledge needed
“And I have not come of Myself, but He who sent Me is true, whom you do not know” John 7:28c
i) Did the Lord Jesus come of Himself?
NO!
ii) He was sent by God the Father
iii) The people did not know God
c) The problem of no real knowledge of God
i) They could not perceive
ii) They could not accept
iii) They could not come to faith

2. Repeated Emphasis of the Lord Jesus

“But I know Him, for I am from Him, and He sent Me” John 7:29

a) The Lord Jesus declared His knowledge of God
b) He declared once again that He was from Him
c) And that He sent Him

3. These were not new Teachings

a) The Relationship of the Lord Jesus to God
i) Father (John 5, 6)
ii) Son (John 5, 6)
b) Sent
i) Him who sent Me (John 4:34)
ii) The Father who sent Me (John 6:44)

REACTION FROM THE JEWS

1. They sought to take Him (John 7:30a)

2. But were not successful (John 7:30b)

3. “His hour had not yet come” John 7:30c

RESPONSE FROM SOME QUARTERS

1. Many believed (John 7:31a)

2. Their reason

“When the Christ comes, will He do more signs than these which this Man has done?” John 7:31b

a) They were impressed with the life of the Lord Jesus
b) They were impacted by His teachings
c) The Sign-Miracles of the Lord Jesus
i) Too many to deny
ii) Too powerful to ignore
iii) Signs of the Messiah
They were inclined to believe that the Lord Jesus was the Christ!
