Sub-Topic: The Ministry of the Spirit of God

THE DESCENT OF THE HOLY SPIRIT UPON THE LORD JESUS

1. The Spirit of God at His baptism

(Noted in the Synoptic Gospels)

2. Significance to be noted:

a) In conjunction with the Commendation of God the Father
“This is My beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased” (Matthew 3:17)
b) In the form of a dove
i) Symbolising gentleness
ii) And peace/tranquility
c) The anointing of the Lord Jesus
i) As a servant of the Lord
ii) As the High Priest (Hebrews 5:1-11)
iii) Empowering for life and ministry

THE MINISTRY OF THE SPIRIT IN THE LIFE OF THE LORD JESUS 

1. He takes the lead

2. He leads the Lord Jesus into the wilderness     (Matthew 4:1; Mark 1:12; Luke 4:1)

a) He must face temptation
b) He must also overcome temptation
c) He must defeat the Devil
d) He can do that as He applies the Word of God
e) The Spirit of God would be there to empower and enable

3. The Power of the Holy Spirit continues (Luke 4:14)

a) Commencement
b) Continuation

THE PROPHECY OF THE ANOINTING OF THE SPIRIT UPON THE MESSIAH

1. This text prophesied the Anointing of the Messiah

2. The fullness of the Spirit’s Anointing is to be noted

a) LORD
The Spirit of the LORD shall rest upon Him (Isaiah 11:2a)
b) Wisdom
The Spirit of wisdom (Isaiah 11:2b)
c) Understanding
And understanding (Isaiah 11:2c)
d) Counsel
The Spirit of counsel (Isaiah 11:2d)
e) Might
And might (Isaiah 11:2e)
f) Knowledge
The Spirit of knowledge (Isaiah 11:2f)
g) Fear of the LORD
And of the fear of the LORD (Isaiah 11:2g)

THE MINISTRY OF THE SPIRIT IN THE LORD JESUS NOTED

1. The power of the Spirit in ministry (Luke 4:14)

a) Ministry in Galilee
b) News of the Lord spread

2. The teaching ministry of the Lord

a) Teaching
He taught in the synagogues of Galilee (Luke 4:15)
b) Glorified
He was glorified by all (Luke 4:15)

3. In the synagogue at Nazareth

a) Knowledge
Obvious familiarity with the Scriptures (Luke 4:16)
i) He knew the book of Isaiah (Luke 4:17a)
ii) He turned to the appropriate text (Luke 4:17b)
iii) He read from the text chosen (Luke 4:17c)
b) Reading
He read what was written (Luke 4:17d; Isaiah 61:1-3)
i) He read with understanding
ii) He read with personal application

4. The ministry of the Holy Spirit was highlighted

a) Spirit- Acknowledgement 
The Spirit of the LORD is upon Me (Luke 4:18a)
b) Anointing- Consciousness
Because He has anointed Me (Luke 4:18b)
c) Preaching- Ministry to the poor
To preach the Gospel to the poor (Luke 4:18c)
d) Healing – Ministry to the broken-hearted
He has sent Me to heal the broken-hearted (Luke 4:18d)
e) Proclaiming- Ministry to captives
To proclaim liberty to the captives (Luke 4:18e)
f) Recovery – Ministry to the blind
And recovery of sight to the blind (Luke 4:18f)
g) Liberty to the oppressed
To set at liberty those who are oppressed (Luke 4:18g)
h) Preaching- Message from God
To proclaim the acceptable year of the LORD (Luke 4:19)

FURTHER UNDERSTANDING OF THE MINISTRY OF THE SPIRIT OF GOD IN THE LIFE OF THE DISCIPLES OF THE LORD

1. The Ministry of the Holy Spirit in our life is vital

2. We have to know more about the Holy Spirit in our life

3. Vital teachings of the Lord Jesus concerning the Spirit of God

a) Helper (John 14)
I will pray the Father, and He will give you another Helper (John 14:16a)
b) Abiding
That He may abide with you forever (John 14:16b)
c) Description/ Explanation
i) The Spirit of truth (John 14:17a)
ii) The world cannot receive Him (John 14:17b)
iii) Because it neither sees Him (John 14:17c)
iv) Nor knows Him (John 14:17d)
v) But you know Him (John 14: 17e)
vi) He dwells with you (John 14:17f)
vii) And will be in you (John 14:17g)
d) The Ministry of witnessing (John 15)
i) When the Helper comes (John 15:26a)
ii) Whom I shall send to you from My Father (John 15:26b)
iii) The Spirit of truth who proceeds from the Father (John 15:26c)
iv) He will testify of Me (John 15:26d)
e) The Vital work of the Spirit of God in the hearts of people
i) He will convict the world of sin (John 16:8a, 9)
ii) And of righteousness (John 16:8b, 10)
iii) And of judgment (John 16:8c, 11)
f) The ministry of the Spirit of truth
i) He will guide you into all truth (John 16:13a)
ii) He will not speak on His own authority (John 16:13b)
iii) Whatever He hears He will speak (John 16:13c)
iv) And He will tell you things to come (John 16:13d)
v) He will glorify Me (John 16:14a)
vi) He will take of what is Mine and declare it to you (John 16:14b, 15)

OUR CHALLENGE

1. To deepen our knowledge of the Spirit of God

2. To be conscious of His role in evangelism

3. To be filled with the Spirit

4. To be sensitive to His leading

5. To be filled with His power
