INTRODUCTION

1. God’s provision

a) It is truly wonderful
b) We should be grateful
c) But we take God’s provision for granted

2. The Feeding of the Five Thousand

a) 5000 men besides the women and children (Matthew 14:21)
b) 5000 men (Mark 6:44; Luke 9:14; John 6:10)
c) This Miracle was recorded in all four gospels
d) It was the only Miracle that was found in all four gospels
e) Obviously, it contains important lessons for us to learn

THE CONTEXT

1. Huge multitudes had flocked to the Lord Jesus from many cities

2. They had brought their sick to the Lord for healing

3. Jesus had compassion on them and healed the sick

4. The people were in a deserted place (Matthew 14:15)

5. They were like sheep without a shepherd (Mark 6:34)

6. Evening was approaching
The people were hungry (Matthew 14:15)

DISCUSSION BETWEEN THE LORD AND HIS DISCIPLES

1. The Disciples

a) They suggested that the multitudes be sent away to buy their own dinner
(Matthew 14:15; Mark 6:36; Luke 9:12)
b) The Lord Jesus did not agree to this suggestion
i) The multitudes need not go away (Matthew 14:16a)
i) He said: “You give them something to eat” (Matthew 14:16b)

2. The Lord Jesus

a) He raised the question of how to feed the multitudes
i) He raised the question to test the disciples (John 6:6a)
ii) He knew what He was going to do (John 6:6b)
b) Philip’s reply
200 denarii would not even be enough to give each one something to eat
(Mark 6:37; John 6:7)
c) Jesus asked the Disciples to check what they had (Mark 6:38)
d) Andrew’s reply
i) They had 5 barley loaves and 2 fish
(Matthew 14:17 Mark 6:38; Luke 9:13; John 6:9a)
ii) This was offered by a little boy (John 6:9a)
iii) “But what are they among so many?” (John 6:9b)

e) Jesus asked that the 5 loaves and 2 fish be brought to Him (Matthew 14:18)

PREPARING TO FEED THE MULTITUDE

1. He asked the Disciples to make the people sit down
(Matthew 14:19; Mark 6:39; Luke 9:14; John 6:10)

2. They were to sit in groups:

a) Of 50 (Luke 9:14)
b) Of 100 (Mark 6:40)

3. There was grass upon which they could sit (Matthew 14:19; Mark 6:39; John 6:10)

GIVING OF THANKS TO GOD

1. Jesus took the 5 loaves and 2 fish and looked up to heaven
(Matthew 14:19a; Mark 6:41; Luke 9:16)

2. He gave thanks (John 6:11)

3. He blessed the 5 loaves and 2 fish (Matthew 14:19b; Mark 6:41; Luke 9:16)

THE DISTRIBUTION OF THE FOOD

1. People could eat as much as they wanted (John 6:11)

2. All ate and were filled (Matthew 14:20; Mark 6:42; Luke 9:17)

NO WASTAGE OF FOOD

1. The Disciples were told to gather the fragments

a) To gather the fragments
b) So that nothing is lost (John 6:12)

2. Twelve baskets of left-over food collected
(Matthew 14:20; Mark 6:43; Luke 9:17; John 6:13)

3. The multitude was then sent away (Matthew 14:22; Mark 6:45)
