Title: “DO NOT BE AFRAID”

INTRODUCTION

1. Heaven

a) This is God’s Kingdom
b) Faith helps us to understand that God and Heaven are real and important

2. Invitation from the Lord Jesus Christ

a) To repent
b) To believe in the Gospel of the Lord Jesus Christ
c) To follow Him

THE CALLING OF THE FIRST GROUP OF FOLLOWERS

1. There are 3 accounts

a) Matthew 4
b) Mark 1
c) Luke 5

2. The short version

a) Matthew
b) Mark

3. The long version is found in Luke 5:1-5

HOW DID THE FIRST FOLLOWERS KNOW ABOUT JESUS?

1. There was a famous prophet called John the Baptiser

a) He came to tell people that Jesus was coming soon
b) He would be far greater than John
c) He would be God’s Chosen and Anointed One (Messiah)

2. Many had heard about the Lord Jesus Christ

a) He was a famous Teacher
b) He was a powerful Healer
c) Many in Galilee had heard about the Lord Jesus Christ
d) James, John, Andrew and Peter had heard about Jesus
and had even spoken to Him (John 1)

3. Multitudes flocked to hear Jesus

a) The sick were brought to the Lord Jesus
b) The possessed were also brought to Him

SPEAKING TO THE CROWDS AT THE SEA OF GALILEE
Luke 5:1-3

1. Jesus preaching to the Multitude at the Sea of Galilee

a) A multitude flocked to hear Him
b) Jesus went to some fishermen (James/ John/ Andrew/ Peter)
c) They had come to shore after a night of fishing
d) They were washing their nets and doing some mending too

2. He borrowed one of the boats

a) He stood in the boat
b) He spoke to the Multitudes
c) He taught the people
d) We can be sure that He talked about the Kingdom of heaven

SPEAKING TO PETER
Luke 5:4-5

1. He said these simple words to Peter

a) Launch out into the deep
b) And let down your nets for a catch (Luke 5:4)

2. Peter’s response

a) Master
b) We have toiled all night and caught nothing
c) Nevertheless, at Your word I will let down the net (Luke 5:5)

IN THE DEEP PART OF THE SEA OF GALILEE
Luke 5:6-7

1. The fishermen let down their nets

2. They caught a great number of fish

3. Their nets were breaking

4. They signalled to their partners to come and help them

5. They came to help and started to load the fish into their boats

6. There were so many fish that their boats began to sink

REALISATION OF PETER AND HIS PARTNERS
Luke 5:8-10

1. They were all astonished

2. They had never seen such a catch of fish

3. Peter suddenly understood who Jesus was!

4. He also realised how sinful he was before the Lord Jesus Christ!

5. Peter said:

a) Depart from me
b) For I am a sinful man,
c) O Lord! (Luke 5:8)

THE LOVING KINDNESS OF THE LORD JESUS CHRIST

1. Do not be afraid

a) He knew that Peter was conscious of his sinfulness
b) He had not come to condemn anyone
c) There is no need to fear

2. The Message of the Lord Jesus Christ

a) Repent
i) It begins with consciousness of our sinfulness
ii) We are afraid that we have too many sins
iii) This was what Peter was feeling (guilty and repentant)
b) The kingdom of heaven is at hand
i) Can Peter believe?
ii) He believed! He had just seen the awesome power of Jesus
iii) When he did not know Jesus so well, he called Him, “Master”
iv) Now, he knows Jesus better, he called him, “Lord”
v) The Lord of Heaven was right there
vi) He invited Peter and his friends to enter into the Kingdom of heaven

3. The Example of Peter and his friends

a) They were humble fishermen
b) They lived in Galilee of the Gentiles
c) They were sinful
d) Yet, the Lord Jesus came to them and invited them to follow Him

CONCLUSION

1. Let us recognize our sinfulness

2. Let us repent of our sins

3. Let us believe in the Lord Jesus

4. Let us follow Him forever
