PAUL AS A SPIRITUAL FATHER

Text: TITUS

PAUL AS A SPIRITUAL FATHER

The apostle Paul displayed a wonderful heart of a father. He saw the churches he founded as a spiritual father (1 Corinthians 4:14-15). He identified three spiritual sons in his epistles.

1. Timothy 1 Timothy 1:2

2. Onesimus Philemon 1:10

3. Titus Titus 1:4

THE EPISTLE TO TITUS

The Epistle to Titus was another pastoral letter Paul wrote. Understandably some of the words of advice given to Titus may also be found in 1 Timothy. Nevertheless the characteristic style of Paul is unmistakable. The following may be observed as typically Pauline.

1. Deep spiritual wisdom

a) This may be traced to the revelation he received from God.
b) His vast experience added tremendous value.
c) All his writings would display deep spiritual wisdom that would prove invaluable.

2. Faithfulness

a) Paul’s life was marked by faithfulness.
i) To the Lord who called him.
ii) To the gospel that was entrusted.
iii) To the spiritual sons he was blessed with.
b) Underlying admonition:-
i) Titus must be challenged to practise faithfulness too.
ii) Nothing less is worthy of a true servant of God.

3. Robustness

a) Paul was committed to the gospel he saw as something committed to him by God.
b) His perspective would always be candid and honest.

VALUABLE AND RELEVANT

The apostle Paul’s Epistle to Titus though written so long ago is still most valuable and relevant. The deep insights and practical words of advice will help us to understand how we may apply our faith more effectively. May we grow in our faith and in our pursuit of godly wisdom!
