You Are The Light Of The World

Doing Our Part To Reach Out

When individual Christians do their part to reach out, the impact collectively can be great. Recently, when Swee Keng asked for help to reach out to her father who was a non-Christian, it was the frequent visits from the pastors and members from Bethany that touched his life. It was the love and care shown to him that changed his mind about having a Taoist funeral to having a Christian one. As we continued to visit him and explained the gospel to him, the Late Mr Lim Bah Sing decided to believe in the Lord in the end. We can make a difference in someone’s life when we do our part to reach out.

Being A Light In This World

“You are the light of the world.”
Matthew 5:14

The Lord Jesus taught His disciples that they were the light of the world. The idea being brought across was that the disciples were meant to be bearers of light. When the Lord Jesus came into this world, He brought the light of life to the hearts of men. He is the light of the world. The disciples, after finding this light, were meant to reflect the light of the Lord wherever they went in this world of darkness. They were meant to be humble and meek (Matthew 5:5). They were meant to be merciful to people in need (Matthew 5:7). As we show care and concern for non-believers, we are seeking to be light bearers for the Lord.

Being What We Were Meant To Be

“A city that is set on a hill cannot be hidden. Nor do they light a lamp and put it under a basket, but on a lampstand, and it gives light to all who are in the house.”
Matthew 5:14-15

If we have found the light of the Lord and His word, we cannot hide the faith that we have gained. We most definitely must express it. A city that is full of light at night cannot be hidden. Just as it is absurd to hide a lit lamp under a basket, it is also absurd if we have the light of faith and we do not share it. We are meant to give light to all whom we come across. We are meant to shine forth our light to the world.

Letting Our Light Shine

“Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works and glorify your Father in heaven.”
Matthew 5:16

How do we let that light shine? It is through doing good works to people wherever we are. It is through caring for non-believers and standing by them in their time of need that they may see the good that we do. They will in turn recognise that these works reflect the kind of God that we have. They will see our good works and ascribe praise to our Father in heaven. Let’s continue to reach out to others through good works. Let’s be challenged to let the light of the Lord Jesus shine through our words and deeds.
