Standing Against The Tide Of Darkness

When we take a look at the world today, it is obvious that it is full of darkness. Mankind is laden and controlled by sin. People are spiritually blinded by the evil one. Many are led astray by false teachings. We also see people living lives that are defeated and spiritually dead. Who will reach out to these people? The Lord is depending on us to be light for Him in this world.

“You are the light of the world.”
Matthew 5:14

While we see the world being corrupted by the tide of darkness, the Lord is counting on us to stand against it. If we, as Christians, do not seek to be light for the people around us, who will? The Lord Jesus Christ is the light of the world. He shines within our hearts and brings light and life to our lives. We, in turn, are to shine for Him… to be light in this dark world.

The Absurdity Of Hiding This Light

“A city that is set on a hill cannot be hidden. Nor do they light a lamp and put it under a basket, but on a lampstand, and it gives light to all who are in the house.”
Matthew 5:14-15

The nature of light is such that it is meant to be seen. It is not meant to be hidden. To emphasize this point, the Lord Jesus compared this light to a city that is set on a hill. We cannot cover up a whole city that is set on a hill. It is quite absurd to attempt this. It is also considered ridiculous to light a candle and place it under a basket. It is meant to be placed on a lampstand so that its rays of light can brighten the room. In the same way, we are not meant to hide the light within us. We are meant to show it.

Shining Forth As Light To The Lord

“Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works and glorify your Father in heaven.”
Matthew 5:16

How can we shine forth as light to the world around us? We can show forth the light of the Lord Jesus through our godly character. The way we respond to situations and matters will show forth the light that is within us. The Lord Jesus taught the disciples to be humble, righteous and gracious before men. They were meant to be meek and peaceful. We are also to shine as light through our actions and deeds. When we take the time to do good works and maintain them, we are shining for the Lord Jesus. The people of the world will see our example and be impacted by them. They can only conclude that this is from the Lord. They will then seek to glorify and praise the Lord. Young people, let’s seek to be light in this world. Let’s shine forth as the Lord meant us to. May we bring glory to the Lord.
