GOING DEEPER IN OUR UNDERSTANDING OF THE LORD AS KING

Pastor has been emphasising with greater depth the concept of the Lord Jesus being our King. Yes, it is hard for us to fully perceive how we should relate to Him as such because we have never been under the rule of a physical king. Nevertheless, through the eyes of Biblical examples, we can seek to learn to do so. The wise men mentioned in the text of Matthew 2 had this in mind.

“Where is He who has been born King of the Jews?”
Matthew 2:2

They recognised Jesus as truly the promised King of Israel. The magi were most probably avid students of the stars. The Lord God must have revealed to them the wonderful significance concerning this special star that had appeared. They recognised that this Baby born would be the King of the Jews. They were able to see that He was no ordinary king but the divine King over the nation of Israel and the world. What are some aspects that we appreciate about the Lord as King?

1. A KING WHO SAVES HIS PEOPLE

In the Old Testament, there are many prophecies concerning the concept of divine Kingship. In the text of Hosea 13:10, the Lord God spoke of how He would be King to the people of Israel.

“I will be Your King;
Where is any other,
That he may save you in all your cities?”
Hosea 13:10

Human kingship can be very limited in its practice. King Saul was selected by the judges during the days of Samuel and he failed miserably. However, God as King is the only One who would be able to save and deliver His people. This would be seen as the ministry of the Lord Jesus. He will save His people from their sins and deliver them in their times of need.

2. A KING WHO LEADS HIS PEOPLE

“For out of you shall come a Ruler
Who will shepherd My people Israel.”
Matthew 2:6

The Scripture quoted by the chief priests and scribes also explained further about Jesus as King. The word “Ruler” in Greek includes the idea of leading. He is a King who leads by example. He would go before the people and lead them through His words and actions. He would have the heart of a true shepherd. He would love His people and care for them as a shepherd would with his sheep. He would tend to them and gently lead them. May we always seek to relate to the Lord Jesus as our Shepherd King. Let’s learn to depend more on the Lord’s leading for 2016.

FOLLOWING THE EXAMPLE OF THE WISE MEN IN WORSHIPPING THE LORD AS KING

“And when they had come into the house, they saw the young Child with Mary His mother and fell down and worshipped Him. And when they had opened their treasures, they presented gifts to Him: gold, frankincense and myrrh.”
Matthew 2:11

When the wise men saw the Child Jesus, they humbly prostrated themselves before the presence of a divine King. There was a deep sense of awe and joy as they had finally found Him. In humble obeisance, they worshipped Him. Their response to the Child Jesus was one of joyful and sincere worship. Out of their riches, they gave towards the Lord: gold, frankincense and myrrh. These were costly gifts specially prepared for a divine King. Young people, let’s always seek to offer humble worship to our King. Let’s also learn to gratefully give offerings to the Lord that would truly please Him.
