Standing In Greater Awe Of The Lord Jesus

These last two months have been a special time of discovering the Lord Jesus in a deeper way. I have come to know Him as I never did before through the many messages that I have heard. As my knowledge of Christ increases, I stand in greater awe of who He is. This depth of understanding of Christ can be read in how the writer of Hebrews thought about the Lord Jesus. He sought to summarize concerning Him as our wonderful High Priest in the text of Hebrews 8.

“Now this is the main point of the things we are saying: We have such a High Priest”
Hebrews 8:1

We have a High Priest like no other. He is a merciful and faithful High Priest in all things pertaining to God (Hebrews 2:17) There is no other intercessor like our Lord Jesus who can understand all that we feel because He was at all points tempted as we are (Hebrews 4:15). There are so many things that we can appreciate of Him. The writer of Hebrews highlights three aspects in this chapter.

1. The Majestic King Seated At The Right Hand Of The Throne Of God

“Who is seated at the right hand of the throne of the Majesty in the heavens”
Hebrews 8:1

A priest who used to serve in the temple of God will always be standing and ready to serve. The Lord Jesus who has passed through the heavens is no longer seen as one who is standing. He is now seated at the right hand of God. This signifies that He has completed His work on earth and is now ruling the heavens and earth as King, together with God. The Lord Jesus is seen as both High Priest and a victorious King. This is His position in heaven. It is one of power and majesty.

2. The Minister Of The Sanctuary

“A Minister of the sanctuary and of the true tabernacle which the Lord erected, and not man.”
Hebrews 8:2

The word “minister” in the Greek refers to one who serves in an official capacity as a priest does in the temple. The Lord Jesus is no longer seen as a bondservant serving as He did on earth. He is now serving in a great official capacity as Minister of the heavenly sanctuary which the Lord God erected in heaven. The Lord Jesus ministers to us in many wonderful ways. He is able to save to the uttermost those who come to God through Him (Hebrews 7:25). He is the one who works in our life and sanctifies us (Hebrews 2:11). The Lord Jesus also ministers to us by listening to our petitions as they are brought before this High Priest and King. These are just some wonderful ways that the Lord Jesus relates to us as a Minister of the sanctuary. Young people, let’s truly appreciate Him and stand in awe of Him.

3. The Mediator Of The New Covenant

“But now He has obtained a more excellent ministry, inasmuch as He is also Mediator of a better covenant, which was established on better promises.”
Hebrews 8:6

The Lord Jesus, through His work of the cross, also brought about a new and living way to relate to God. He brought about a New Covenant that is based on better promises. He is the Mediator of this much better covenant. The Lord God, through Christ, will now write His word upon our heart. Everybody can come and know this God. He will be our God and we are His people and most of all, He will be merciful to our sins and He will not remember them anymore. Truly, let’s be thankful for this wonderful New Covenant that we have in Christ. Praise the Lord!
