HAVING A STRONG SENSE OF CALLING IN BEING ONE AS A CHURCH

God has given us many calls; the call to salvation, the call to sanctification, the call to service, etc. These calls have been given to all of us in a general sense. But it is up to us to apply them individually. Because of this, we can live our life with a definite sense of purpose and meaning, even in this time of “circuit breaker”. One of the things that the Lord has called us to have is a sense of oneness as a Church.

1. AS A WHOLE BUILDING FITTED TOGETHER

“In whom the whole building being fitted together, grows into a holy temple in the Lord”
Ephesians 2:21

With Christ as the chief cornerstone, we are meant to be fitted together and to grow together as Church. All of us are meant to grow together as a holy temple of God where His Spirit dwells in.

2. AS BEING PART OF THE SAME BODY OF CHRIST

“That the Gentiles should be fellow heirs of the same body and partakers of His promise in Christ through the gospel”
Ephesians 3:6

We, the Gentiles, are also called to be part of the Church. Both the Jews and Gentiles can belong to the same body of Christ. We are meant to be fellow heirs, bonded to each other as part of His body.

WALK WORTHY OF OUR CALLING IN BEING UNITED AS A CHURCH

“I, therefore, the prisoners of the Lord, beseech you to walk worthy of the calling with which you were called”
Ephesians 4:1

1. THE CONCRETE EXAMPLE OF PAUL IN WALKING WORTHY

If there was someone who really sought to walk worthy of his calling in being one with God’s people, it would be Paul. Despite being incarcerated, he still wrote to the Ephesians and to encourage them to the one. He thought of the Church’s unity even though he was cut off from everyone else.

2. THE COMMITMENT TO WALK TOGETHER AS ONE

The word “walk” in Greek is the word “peripateo”. It has the idea of “conducting one’s life”. We are meant to see our lives as a whole and to conduct them in a worthy manner. There must come the commitment to walk together as one not just for moments but for our whole lives. We are meant to live our lives with the unity of the whole Church in mind. This was something that the apostle Peter also wrote about.

“Finally, all of you be of one mind, having compassion for one another … Knowing that you were called to this”
1 Peter 3:8-9

The early Christians were meant to have the same mind in being compassionate and loving to each other because they were called to this. This is applicable to us today! Walking worthy is not about what we want to do individually. It is about walking worthy together as a Church in unison.

3. THE CONSCIOUSNESS OF WHO HAS CALLED US

The word “worthy” in Greek means “a high level of value”. It has the idea of seeking to live in a worthy manner and we are to do this in response to the One who has called us. We are to please the Lord by walking worthy as one. Let’s seek to be conscious of the Lord as we walk each day.

PERSONAL APPLICATION

1. Despite being “stuck at home”, let’s still learn to look out for each other as a Church.

2. Let’s be encouraged to walk worthy of our calling to be one as a Church.

3. Let’s continue to care for each other and keep this sense of bond as God’s people.
