FOCUSING ON WALKING WORTHY OF THE LORD

Faith and life must go together. Our faith in the Lord Jesus is never complete without its expressions seen in the way we live our lives. We should conduct our lives in a manner that is worthy of the person of Christ.

“Only let your conduct be worthy of the gospel of Christ”
Philippians 1:27

“Only” in Greek is the word “mono”. It has the idea of focusing only on living our lives well before the Lord. Our focus should be on walking worthy of the Christ of the gospel. He is the One whom we should be deeply indebted to for the salvation we have in Him. It is through the gospel that we have come to know Christ and to believe in Him. It is through the gospel that we are called to salvation. Let’s seek to walk worthy of the Lord. Why do we want to focus on walking worthy?

1. BECAUSE IT AIDS US IN STANDING AGAINST THE ENEMIES OF THE GOSPEL

“And not in any way terrified by your adversaries”
Philippians 1:28

There were those who were enemies of Paul and of the Philippians. While they may seem to be preaching the gospel, their intentions for doing so were selfish and sinful. Their conduct was not blameless before the Lord. They did whatever they wanted. When the Philippians sought to conduct themselves well with faith and love, they would be able to stand against their enemies with courage. Their lives would be honourable before the Lord. The conduct of the Philippians would help them to be distinct from these enemies.

2. BECAUSE IT HELPS US TO STAND OUT AS CITIZENS OF THE KINGDOM OF GOD

“Only let your conduct be worthy of the gospel of Christ”
Philippians 1:27

The word “conduct” in Greek is the word “politeuomai”. It has the idea of living our life as a citizen of a country. In this context, Paul was challenging the Philippians to behave well as good citizens of the kingdom of God. They were to be citizens who would walk worthy of the Lord Jesus Christ as their King.

ASPECTS OF WALKING WORTHY OF THE GOSPEL

“That you stand fast in one spirit, with one mind striving together for the faith of the gospel”
Philippians 1:27

How can we go about walking worthy of the Lord?

1. BY MEANS OF ONENESS

There must be a deep sense of oneness in serving the Lord together. There should be oneness of spirit, mind and soul. There were those who preached the gospel out of envy and strife (Philippians 1:15). They were doing things that were contrary to oneness. Young people, let’s also seek to cultivate this sense of unity among us even as we serve.

2. BY MEANS OF STEADFASTNESS

Paul also challenged the Philippians to have a deep sense of steadfastness as they stood against the adversaries of the gospel. They were to stand fast in one spirit. They were to strive vigorously together for the Lord and the truths of the gospel. There is an invisible spiritual battle that we are engaged in today. Let’s stand fast and strive together for the Lord and His gospel.
