Correcting Misconceptions Of Life

“The race is not to the swift,
Nor the battle to the strong,
Nor bread to the wise,
Nor riches to men of understanding,
Nor favor to men of skill”

Ecclesiastes 9:11

People have many misconceptions about life. Very often, they tend to think that those who are naturally more intelligent and talented will have a better chance of succeeding in life. The swift runner will always win the race. The strongest will win battles. The wise will always have bread to eat. Those who have understanding will have riches. The skilled will always be favoured. It is common for us to think thus of life. And yet, such notions are not always reality. It is important that we correct such misconceptions of the realities of life.

The Principle Of Time And Chance Must Be Considered

“But time and chance happen to them all.
For a man also does not know his time:
Like fish taken in a cruel net,
Like birds caught in a snare,
So the sons of men are snared in an evil time,
When it suddenly falls upon them.”

Ecclesiastes 9:11-12

The crux of the matter is that life is unpredictable. Sometimes, time and chance bring about bad circumstances in life. The problems of life can come upon us like a fish caught in a net. The fish can be at one moment swimming freely in the sea. In the next moment, it could be caught in a fishing net. A bird can also be caught by a trap in a moment of unguardedness. In a similar way, we can be also be ensnared suddenly by the problems and difficulties of life. When we are unprepared for it, we will find our world in total disarray. We will never know what is in store for us in life because time and chance happens to all. It is best that we live our lives wisely and with joy. It is best that we live it depending on God’s grace and mercies.

“Life is unpredictable… Live it well, depending on God.”
