Remembering Those Who Perished At Mount Kinabalu

It was heart-wrenching to receive the news of the Mount Kinabalu tragedy. Seven children, two teachers and one guide from Singapore perished as rocks rained on them when an earthquake struck the mountain. The hearts of many in Singapore went out to the parents and families of all these students and the teachers whose lives were suddenly snuffed out. No words would be able to describe the grief that these grieving parents must be feeling right now. May we continue to think about them and to specially remember them in prayer!

Considering Seriously The Frailty Of Life

“All flesh is grass,
And all its loveliness is like the flower of the field.

The grass withers, the flower fades,

Because the breath of the Lord blows upon it;

Surely the people are grass.

The grass withers and the flowers fades …”

Isaiah 40:6-8

In this text of Isaiah 40, there was a prophecy concerning what the forerunner to the Lord Jesus would preach on. One of the themes of his messages would be about the frailty of life. All human beings are like the grass and the flower in the field. It can be most beautiful for a brief period but it would wither and fade soon after. The death of these primary 6 students reminds us of how frail life is. Peony Wee, one of the deceased TKGS students said “Goodbye” to her parents in recorded message to them. She did not think at that time that those were the last words she would say to her parents. Life is frail and most transient. No matter how rich we are or how confident we are about ourselves in this life, we all have a short and fleeting one. Young people, what are we doing with our life? Let’s not take it for granted. Let’s not waste it.

Considering The Eternity Of God’s Word

“… But the word of our God stands forever.”
Isaiah 40:8

This word was given to the people who were about to go into exile. They would see many people die. But the message that God wants to give to His people is one of great comfort. There would be restoration. What was it that the people should focus on? It would be the eternal nature of the word of God. The truth of the word of God will outlast any life, any generation and any epoch of time. It is timeless. It is from His word that we can find the meaning of our life. It is from His word that we can find God and His purpose for us. Thus, it would greatly benefit us if we were to give His word the high regard that it deserves. During these holidays, let’s take time to read and know the word of God.

The Challenge To See And Believe In The Immensity Of God

“Say to the cities of Judah, ‘Behold your God!'”
Isaiah 40:9

As we consider how frail life is and how the word of God lasts forever, our challenge is to seek to know Him. Since His word stands forever, so does He. His word to the people was that He would bring comfort to them. He is a great and compassionate God who pardons our iniquity. This was the comforting message that was to be brought to the cities in Judah. The Lord God will rule as a strong King (Isaiah 40:10). He is also a great shepherd who tenderly leads and provides for His own. Israel was meant to re-discover the Lord God in a new and special way. They were to know how immense God is, to exercise faith in Him and to experience His great grace. Young people, let’s also seek to behold and perceive our God for who He really is. As we take time to study His word, let’s acknowledge the Lord God as our God, and may we be deeply encouraged by Him.
