The Humility Of The Lord Jesus

We all need to seek the filling of the Spirit of God in our life. One of the ways to learn about this is to see how the Spirit worked in the life and ministry of the Lord Jesus. In the text of Isaiah 11:1-2, a prophetic word was recorded concerning the Spirit of God and the life of the Messiah. But before He was filled with the Holy Spirit, He needed to be humble enough for Him to fill.

“There shall come forth a Rod from the stem of Jesse, and a Branch shall grow out of his roots.”

Isaiah 11:1-2

The Lord Jesus was only called a Branch in this passage. This is indeed a special expression of great humility. The Lord Jesus deserved to be called the Sovereign King. And yet, this prophecy would humbly refer to Him as only a Branch (The Lord Jesus) that is growing out of a stem. Furthermore, this idea of a Branch growing out of the roots of Jesse is about Him being an outstanding King. He would succeed as King where no one else would. The big difference was that He was filled with the Spirit of God. Young people, let’s also be filled with the Spirit of God.

The Fullness Of The Spirit Of God Filling The Lord

“The Spirit of the Lord shall rest upon Him, The Spirit of wisdom and understanding, The Spirit of counsel and might, The Spirit of knowledge and of the fear of the Lord.”

Isaiah 11:2

The Lord Jesus was to be filled with the fullness of the Spirit in the following ways.

  1. Knowledge

The Spirit of God would enable the Lord Jesus to not just have knowledge but to grow deep in it. There is a depth of knowledge that only the Spirit of God can give. He searches the deep things of God and He would reveal them to those who would seek them from the Scriptures (1 Corinthians 2:12-13).

  1. Wisdom, Discernment And Counsel

It is the Spirit of God who would give practical wisdom to the Lord Jesus. There would be the discernment to distinguish between what is true and what is false. There would be the ability from the Spirit to give counsel. The Lord Jesus was able to discern what was in the heart of Nicodemus and thus He sought to give corrective counsel to him (John 3).

  1. Strength For Life And Ministry

The Spirit of God would also give much strength and authority to the Lord Jesus. The Lord would also strengthen us through His Spirit according to the working of His mighty power (Ephesians 3:16). There is the enabling of the Holy Spirit for all things concerning life and godliness.

  1. Reverence For The Lord And His Word

The Spirit of God would also help us practise the Lordship of God. He would encourage us to have the highest regard for the Lord and His word. The fear of the Lord would be our delight (Isaiah 11:3). Let’s truly seek to find this fullness of the Spirit of God filling our life and ministry. Let’s always seek to have the greatest regard for God and His word.
