Understanding The Spirit’s Anointing

Wielding the sword of the Spirit is not an easy undertaking. We need to know the word of God well enough to use it skilfully against false teachers. Truly, we thank God that He has provided a special anointing that will aid us in this endeavour.

“But you have an anointing from the Holy One…”
1 John 2:20

The word “anointing” comes from the Greek word “charisma” which means “unction” or “specially anointed with oil”. In the Old Testament, prophets and kings were anointed by oil and dedicated for God’s work. It was given as a sign of God’s approval. When this anointing came upon God’s servants, the results were evident. They spoke with great authority and power. In today’s context, the anointing of the Holy Spirit enables us to defend our faith against false teachings. John wrote of how in the last days, the Anti-Christ will come. There will come many antichrists. They will deny Christ and all that He represents. The anointing of the Spirit of God helps us to defend ourselves against them.

Expressions Of The Anointing Of The Spirit Of God

How do we know that we have the anointing of the Spirit? Firstly, there will come the depth of knowledge of God’s truth.

“… and you know all things. I have not written to you because you do not know the truth, but because you know it…”
1 John 2:20-21

John was explaining how they knew the truths of God. The Christians that John was addressing had grown in their understanding of the scriptures.

Secondly, there is the enabling to discern between that which is false and true.

“And you do not need that anyone to teach you; but as the same anointing teaches you concerning all things, and is true, and it is not a lie…”
1 John 2:27

This does not mean that we do not need any teachers to teach us. It is a reference that we do not need to be taught further after being taught deeply in the word of God . If we are filled with the Spirit of God and know the truth, He will help us discern between false teaching and truth.

Seeking The Filling Of The Spirit Of God

Our challenge is to seek to be filled so much more with the Spirit of God.

1. Through Developing A Reservoir Of Knowledge Of God’s Truth

“Therefore let that abide in you which you heard from the beginning…”
1 John 2:24

Let’s seek to remember and retain the many lessons that we have been taught from the word of God.

2. Through Cultivating A Closer Relationship With The Lord Jesus

“You also will abide in the Son and in the Father.”
1 John 2:24

Let’s seek to draw closer to the Lord Jesus and the Father.

3. Through Much Prayer

It is through prayer that the Spirit will grant us wisdom and understanding in God’s word. Let’s ask the Spirit of God to fill us in a special way.
