UNDERSTANDING THE CONCEPT OF INHERITANCE

The spiritual blessings that the Lord has given us through our salvation in Christ are truly glorious. They are so amazing that it would take prayer and the enlightenment of the Spirit of God to help us understand them fully. This was what the apostle Paul did for the Ephesian Church. One of the blessings that he prayed for the Ephesians to understand was the idea of inheritance. Two aspects may be highlighted.

1. OUR INHERITANCE

The first aspect is our inheritance. All of us have an eternal inheritance that cannot be taken away. As children of the Lord God, He has reserved for us this special inheritance.

A. IN CHRIST

“In Him also we have obtained an inheritance”
Ephesians 1:11

It is in the Lord Jesus Christ that we have obtained an inheritance. When we have faith centred in Him, this eternal inheritance is provided for us. This is indeed a wonderful gift. Let’s truly appreciate the Lord Jesus for his role in giving us this blessing.

B. WITH THE HOLY SPIRIT

“You were sealed with the Holy Spirit of promise, who is the guarantee of our inheritance until the redemption of the purchased possession.”
Ephesians 1:13-14

When we believe in the Lord Jesus, the Holy Spirit becomes our seal. He is the guarantee of our inheritance. He is the continuing assurance within our heart that we would have this everlasting gift one day.

2. GOD’S INHERITANCE

The second aspect is that “we” are His inheritance.

“What are the riches of the glory of His inheritance in the saints”
Ephesians 1:18

Paul sought to explain how God’s people are His inheritance. He prayed that the Ephesians would be able to comprehend and be enlightened to the richness and the glory of His inheritance in the saints. What is it that God glories in?

A. HIS WORK

The Lord God glories in His work that He has done in our life. It is through His work that we are transformed to be more and more like the Lord Jesus. He would save and sanctify us. We are meant to be His workmanship, created for good works (Ephesians 2:10). As the Lord does a special work of transforming our lives, we would reflect His glory. We are to reflect His love. We are to reflect His grace. These are things that He would glory in.

B. HIS WILL

Another thing that the Lord would glory in is His will. It is what the Lord would want us to become for the future. It is through His word that we can discover, know and seek to practise His will. The Lord glories in His will being understood and followed. When we follow His will, the way we live and serve would show forth His glory. There is so much richness to the glory of His will contained in the Scriptures. Let’s seek to know His will that we may understand them and follow it! Let’s seek to reflect His glory by obeying His will.
