The Example Of Timothy In Being Like-Minded

It is not easy to be like-minded. Yet, this was something that Paul and Timothy exemplified. Timothy was commended by Paul for being such.

“For I have no one like-minded”
Philippians 2:20

The phrase “like-minded” in Greek means to be equal in mind and soul. There was a meeting of souls with regard to what they were doing for the Lord.

1. Timothy Sincerely Cared For Others

“Who will sincerely care for your state. For all seek their own, not the things which are of Christ Jesus.”
Philippians 2:20-21

Timothy genuinely cared for the physical well-being and spiritual state of fellow Christians. He was really concerned for his fellows Christians at Philippi. Many would prefer to care about themselves, but that was not Timothy’s way of doing things. He, together with Paul, sought to sincerely care for fellow Christians.

2. Timothy Served With Paul In The Gospel

“He served with me in the gospel.”
Philippians 2:22

The word “served” in the Greek means to serve as a slave. Timothy understood what it meant to serve in the gospel. Timothy learnt to have a true bondservant’s heart. Paul commended Timothy for being a fellow and faithful servant in the gospel.

Cultivating Like-Mindedness In Service

How can we go about cultivating like-mindedness in service to the Lord?

1. It Takes Everyone Possessing The Mind Of Christ

“Let this mind be in you which was also in Christ Jesus”
Philippians 2:5

Timothy was more concerned about the things of Christ. He sought to practise this mind of Christ which Paul challenged the Philippians to have. This mindset is one of being a bondservant, humbling oneself to do the will of God and being obedient to it to the end. Young people, let’s learn to cultivate this humble mindset of Christ.

2. It Takes Character

“But you know his proven character”
Philippians 2:22

It also takes good character to practise like-mindedness in life and ministry. Timothy proved his character by consistently seeking to be like-minded with Paul, his spiritual father, in service. Let’s also cultivate our character that we may serve the Lord as one.
