Understanding The Detrimental Effects Of Sin

All of us have a sinful nature. This is a fact. There is an innate tendency within us to do that which is wrong. It is vital that we understand how detrimental sin can be to us.

“Wash me thoroughly from my iniquity,
And cleanse me from my sin.
For I acknowledge my transgressions,
And my sin is always before me.
Against You, You only, have I sinned,
And done this evil in Your sight”

Psalm 51:2-4

Sin makes us feel unclean and unworthy. The Psalmist sought the Lord for cleansing because he felt tainted and filthy within himself. Furthermore, sin can haunt us continuously through the guilt we feel. David acknowledged how his sins were ever before him. It was as if they were mocking him. Sin has a haunting power that can plague us constantly. Ultimately, sin causes us to go against God. David realised that sinning is an affront against the Lord. Young people, sin can be most detrimental to us.

Dealing With Our Sin Problem

Since sin has such an adverse effect on our lives, let learn to deal with it adequately.

1. Seeking Constant Cleansing Of Sin In Our Lives

“Wash me thoroughly from my iniquity”
Psalm 51:2

David sought the cleansing of his sins again and again. Only the Lord had the power to remove the guilt and the hold that sin had on David’s life. He sought the Lord to wash himself thoroughly from his sins. We too need to pray to the Lord for His cleansing.

2. Being Conscious That God Desires Truth Within Us

“Behold, You desire truth in the inward parts”
Psalm 51:6

David was conscious that God wanted him to walk right with Him. The Lord desired that His truths dwell within his heart and soul. In order to do this, he must learn to memorise and meditate on the word of God. He sought to practise the truth of God’s word.

3. Being Wiser As A Result Of Understanding

“And in the hidden part You will make me to know wisdom.”
Psalm 51:6

With a further understanding of the nature of sin, David learned to be wiser. After experiencing what sin could do in his life, he learned not to sin. When we have experienced the turmoil of sinning against God, He helps us to be wiser when it comes to living our lives. Let’s seek to choose to walk in God’s ways rather than in the ways of sin.
