Learning To Sing To God With Understanding

Worshipping the Lord should never be done without understanding. In this day and age, Churches have the tendency to worship God without much depth of comprehension of Him and without a true relationship with Him. Very often, the worship is more based on a “feel good” approach rather than a depth of faith. When the sons of Korah contemplated about praising God, they saw that He deserved nothing less than glorious praise.

“Sing praise to God, sing praises!
Sing praises to our King, sing praises!

Sing praises with understanding.”

Psalm 47:6-7

They made a call for all to sing to God with joy and exuberance. More importantly, they were to sing to God with a depth of understanding. Comprehension of God is most definitely needed in order to offer glorious praise to Him. Singing to God involves a heart, mind and spirit that really appreciate Him. Worship should never be a mindless thing. Young people, let’s seek to learn how go deeper in our understanding that we may offer greater praise to Him.

Praising God With A Deeper Understanding Of God’s Sovereignty

One reason why we should praise God most gloriously is His sovereign rule as King.

1. God’s Present Sovereignty

“For the Lord Most High is awesome;
He is a great King over all the earth.”

Psalm 47:2

There is no one higher than our Lord God almighty. He is called the Lord Most High. This is a great and majestic title that is due to Him. No other person can be given such a title. He is the One who created both heaven and earth and He possesses them in the palm of His hand. The Lord God has universal rule over all the earth. This is how extensive His scope of rule is. He has absolute authority over all things and creatures on this earth. Truly, our great King and God is most awesome.

2. God’s Prophetic Sovereignty

“God reigns over the nations;
God sits on His holy throne.
The princes of the people have gathered together,
The people of the God of Abraham.
For the shields of the earth belong to God;
He is greatly exalted.”

Psalm 47:8-9

Another important aspect that we want to praise God for is the future reign that He would establish on this earth through Christ. This would only be fulfilled in the Millennium Kingdom. The Lord Jesus would establish His everlasting kingdom on this earth. God who sits on the heavenly throne would reign on this earth through His Son. All rulers of the nations including Israel will one day belong to the Lord. They will recognise His sovereignty and we will be fellow rulers with Him (Psalm 47:3). Truly, may we be able to sing praises to the Lord as our sovereign God now and forever. Let’s always seek to greatly exalt Him as our glorious King.
