Having A Great Regard For The Word Of God

The word of God is truly glorious. Even as the heavens (sun, moon and stars) declare how glorious God is as creator. His word also brings about glorious things in people’s lives when they read and know the Scriptures. In the text of Psalm 19, it is stated that the word of God can change our lives. It can give wisdom to the simple person. The Scriptures when meditated on enlighten our eyes and bring great joy to our hearts. When the word of God is understood for its worth, it becomes more desired than fine gold and it is considered to be “sweeter” than the honeycomb (Psalm 19:7-10). The Psalmist had the highest regard for the Scriptures. He saw how glorious the word of God is.

Praying In The Light Of The Word Of God

As the Psalmist read the Scriptures and meditated on it, he also realised how sinful he was. He responded by praying to the Lord in the light of His word.

1. Praying With Regards To Being Freed From The Power Of Sin

“Cleanse me from secret faults.
Keep back your servant also from presumptuous sins;

Let them not have dominion over me.

Then I shall be blameless

And I shall be innocent of great transgression.”

Psalm 19:12-13

The Psalmist sought to deal with his sins. He prayed for cleansing for the sins that were in his life. David recognised how there were sins that were not known to people. And yet, he knew he could not hide them from God. He also saw how he could presumptuously and wilfully sin against God despite knowing that it would hurt and anger Him. Furthermore, he saw how sin could dominate and destroy a person’s life. Young people, let’s pray that the Lord would set us free from the power of sin. We need the Lord’s grace to keep us from presumptuous sins. When He works in our lives with regard to our sins, we will be able to be blameless before God. We will be not be guilty of committing grave sins.

2. Praying For Our Thoughts And Words To Be Acceptable To God

“Let the words of my mouth and the meditation of my heart
Be acceptable in Your sight,

O Lord, my strength and my Redeemer.”

Psalm 19:14

The Psalmist also prayed further that His daily thoughts and the words that he spoke from his heart would be acceptable to the Lord. The heart of the matter is the heart. Very often, wrong and sinful feelings come out from the heart. The challenge was for the Psalmist to meditate on the word of God so much so that his thoughts would be acceptable and pleasing to Him. What he says or does would also be right in His eyes. May we have a greater consciousness of this great and holy God. Let’s always seek to make what we think, do and say be blameless before Him. Let’s seek to please Him in all that we do. He will grant us the grace and strength to do so.
