LEARNING WELL ABOUT THE LORD

Ephesians has thus far been a wonderful epistle to learn from and to dwell on. There is so much that we can appreciate about what we have in Christ as fellow saints and being part of His body. As we come to the end of another chapter, let’s take time to ask ourselves what it is that we have learnt.

“But you have not so learnt Christ, if indeed you have heard Him and have been taught by Him, as the truth is in Jesus”
Ephesians 4:20

The word “learnt” is from the Greek word “manthano”. It has the idea of how a disciple would go about learning. It is much more than just gaining head-knowledge. It is learning through the application of truth. The focus of our learning is Christ-centredness. The apostle Paul had written much about the Lord Jesus, what He stands for, what He has done for us, and what more He can do for us in our lives. He stands for truth and we are meant to learn how to abide in truth as He is in truth. When we have learnt well His truths, we would change for the better. We would no longer go back to living like the world. Here is an acronym that Pastor taught us recently about learning.

1. L – LEAVING THE OLD WAYS BEHIND

Learning is about putting away our old ways of sinning and our persistent bad habits. Ephesians 4 is about walking worthy of our calling to be one. We are meant to be a body of Christ that grows together in love. In order to do this, we need to leave our old ways far behind. Learning from Christ is about setting aside our old man that hinders spiritual growth and oneness.

2. E – EXPERIENCES

Part of our learning is gaining experience through the actual application of truth. It is gaining understanding of truth through practical means. We are to discover and employ our spiritual gifts that we may help to edify each other with truths and to build up the Church. If we do our part, we can experience strength and growth as a Church.

3. A – ADDING ON

Adding on to our understanding and our life practices is what true learning is. We can grow in our knowledge and understanding of His word. There is the need for us to build up our knowledge of truth. We can also add on by practising His word; speaking the truth to each other and sharing that which is good for godly edification. Learning His truths well will help us make progress in our lives.

4. R – REVIEWING

Another way to learn is taking the time to review and revamp our lives. As we review our strengths and weaknesses, we can revamp where we are weak. We can build further on our strengths. When we take time to review our lives with His truths, we can learn even more.

5. N – NEW SYSTEM OF LIVING (THE NEW MAN)

Learning is also about moving towards having a new system of living. It is putting aside the old man and putting on the new man. As we seek to learn and follow His truths, we become more like Him. We would be created according to God in true righteousness and holiness (Ephesians 4:24). Let’s seek to learn well about the Lord and to apply His truths to our lives. Let’s seek to be more like Him.
