The Preparation Of King Jotham In Following The Lord’s Way

Preparation is always key in doing anything well. If you want to win an Olympic medal, you need to train hard for it. If you want to do well for an exam, you have to prepare well for it too. If you want to have a significant life and ministry, you need to plan how you want to achieve it. This was something that King Jotham did as we read in the text of 2 Chronicles 27:6. He prepared himself well with regards to how he wanted to reign as king.

“Because he prepared his ways before the Lord his God.”
2 Chronicles 27:6

When his father Uzziah became a leper because of his pride in wanting to offer incense in the house of the Lord, Jotham became the ruler on behalf of him in the land of Judah. During that time till the day his father died, he thought about how he wanted to rule the land. He prepared himself well concerning how he was going to live and rule.

1. He Was Deeply Conscious Of Lord As His God

Jotham had a personal relationship with the Lord as his God. He was most conscious of Him and how he was a God who would judge those who disobeyed his commandments. Every day, when he saw his father in his leprous state, it would be a reminder of how the Lord is to be revered and His word is to be carefully followed.

2. Doing The Right Things That His Father Did

“And he did what was right in the sight of the Lord, according to all that his father Uzziah had done …”
2 Chronicles 27:2

He prepared his heart to follow the good things that his father did. He sought to do that which was right in the sight of the Lord. He humbled himself and followed Him. Let’s also seek to do that which is right in the sight of the Lord.

3. Not Making The Same Mistake As His Father Did

“… (Although he did not enter the temple of the Lord).”
2 Chronicles 27:2

Jotham prepared his heart also to not follow the wrong things that his father did. His father went against the word of God by doing that which was meant only for the priests. The young king prepared his heart to not be caught up with pride and allow himself to sin in the same manner before the Lord. He made sure that when he became strong, he would remain humble.

The Blessing Of Strength

“So Jotham became mighty”
2 Chronicles 27:6

Because King Jotham prepared his ways before Lord and sought to live righteously, he became strong as a king and a person. The Lord blessed him and he became mighty. He had a strong army and strong defences. He fought with the king of the Ammonites and he defeated him and his army. He took time to look after the house of the Lord. The Lord strengthened him in all his ways and he continued to walk before Him. Brethren, let’s also learn to prepare our ways before the Lord. Let’s determined how we want to live and serve Him at different stages of our life. May the Lord indeed bless us with His strength as we seek to walk uprightly before Him!
