PRECEPT UPON PRECEPT

Learning From The Lord

The Lord desires to teach us deep and wonderful lessons of truth and life. However, He cannot teach us when we are not as receptive as we should in our learning. There are times when we are rebellious and we do not seek to learn. In the text of Isaiah 28, the whole society of Israel was too drunk to discern the teachings of the Lord. Even the priests and the prophets were caught up with drinking.

“The priest and the prophet have erred through intoxicating drink”
Isaiah 28:7

The religious leaders and the people had sinned against the Lord. They had become so involved in drinking that they stumbled in their judgement. They could not discern the Lord’s teaching.

Principles Of Learning

How can we go about learning lessons of life from the Lord?

1. Learning To Go Deeper In Our Knowledge

“Whom will he teach knowledge?
And whom will he make to understand the message?
Those just weaned from milk?
Those just drawn from the breasts?”

Isaiah 28:9

When the time comes for a baby to learn to be weaned from mother’s milk, he will learn how to do without. He will learn to drink other types of milk and eat solid food. In the same way, we must gain deeper knowledge and not just feed on “milk”.

2. Learning Precepts, One Line At A Time

“For precept must be upon precept, precept upon precept,
Line upon line, line upon line.”

Isaiah 28:10

The Lord seeks to teach us many precepts. But He knows that we can only learn one precept at a time. We cannot learn many precepts simultaneously. We must seek to learn about the truths of God one line at a time. We must seek to learn diligently.

3. Learning A Little At A Time

“Here a little, there a little.”
Isaiah 28:10

Learning cannot be done in large amounts. It has to be done in trickles. Along the way, we learn and ascertain understanding of truths by small amounts. Such is the nature of learning from God. It cannot be done in a hurry. Let’s patiently learn from God.
