An Example Of A Life Driven By Christ-Centered Goals

In life and ministry, it is important that we set goals for ourselves. Without them, we would not know where we would be going nor would there be the drive to achieve anything. The apostle Paul is a great example of one whose life was driven by Christ-centered goals, even though he was in prison.

“To this end I also labor”
Colossians 1:29

Paul’s aim for his ministry to the Colossians was to help them become spiritually mature. His goal was centered on Christ, to preach Him, the hope of glory, that every man may be perfect in Him (Colossians 1:28). It was achieving this aim that compelled him to work hard. Young people, let’s work out goals for our life and ministry that are Christ-centered. Let’s be driven by them.

An Example Of Strong Commitment In Working Hard

“To this end I also labor, striving”
Colossians 1:29

How did Paul go about achieving his goals?

1. Toiling Hard

The word “labor” in the Greek means “to work until one is weary”. It is to toil day and night on what we need to do. Paul labored hard continuously for the Lord’s work. He spared no effort towards what he needed to do.

2. Fighting On

The word “striving” in the Greek means to “contend as in a contest”. It is also from this Greek word that we derive the English word “agonize”. Paul endeavored with great zeal to obtain his goal. Paul faced all kinds of difficulties as he served the Lord but he fought on. Many of you are preparing for or already taking your exams. May you spare no effort in doing your best for them. Let’s press on.

An Example Of Full Dependence On The Lord’s Power

“According to His working which works in me mightily.”
Colossians 1:29

As Paul did his part to work hard, God did His part to empower him. He worked hard according to the divine energy that worked in him. There is a pattern by which the Lord will energize a person. It is through His mighty power that He will work within us. He will bestow His dynamic and endless power on us as we labor on. Young people, let’s learn to depend on His grace for this power. Let’s seek to fully trust in this power of the Lord, which works in us mightily.
