MAKING SURE THAT THE CHURCH STAYS AS ONE

There are dangers that may affect the oneness of the church.

1. False doctrines can infiltrate the church and cause it to stray (Ephesians 4:14).

2. Personal conflict can cause relationships in the Church to be strained (Ephesians 4:31).

If these things are not dealt with, they can adversely affect the Church. As such, Paul made this important call for everyone to walk worthy of His calling to be one (Ephesians 4:1). It is crucial that we bear the fruit of the Spirit that we may be able to relate to each other well (Ephesians 4:2-3). It takes much effort for us to keep the unity of the Spirit.

DEVELOPING A SENSE OF ONENESS IN THE CHURCH

“There is one body and one Spirit. Just as you were called in one hope of your calling; One Lord, one faith, one baptism; one God and Father of all, who is above all, and through all, and in you all.”
Ephesians 4:4-6

How can this sense of oneness be developed?

1. DOCTRINAL ONENESS IN THE CHURCH

One of the ways to help the Church to have a sense of oneness is through doctrinal integrity. The seven things listed are doctrines that we are meant to understand, appreciate deeply and to be applied as a Church. When it is united in understanding key doctrines like God, the Lord Jesus and the Holy Spirit, there will be this sense of oneness. We can better stand against all kinds of false doctrine and not be swayed by them.

2. DIRECT INVOLVEMENT OF THE TRIUNE GODHEAD IN THE ONENESS OF THE CHURCH

We can also see the Triune Godhead’s involvement in the oneness of the Church.

A. THE PERFECT ONENESS OF THE TRIUNE GODHEAD

i. The Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit are in perfect unity when it comes to being involved in the Church.

ii. They work with each other in perfect harmony.

The focus of the Church is on the Lord Jesus Christ. The Father is sovereign over all things and the Spirit of God is the One who does everything to glorify the Lord Jesus.

B. THE PERSONAL INTEGRATION OF THE TRIUNE GODHEAD WITH GOD’S PEOPLE

The Triune Godhead is wonderfully and personally involved in the lives of God’s people. Oneness of the body of Christ is created by the Spirit of God. He is the One who seeks to teach and lead each Christian to be one with reference to the Church. The Lord Jesus is the One whereby the Church can find oneness of faith and hope and be baptised into it. The Church’s focus would be on the Lord Jesus and seeks to be identified with Him. The Lord God is the One who works through all things and is in all of us. It takes nothing less than the triune Godhead to make the Church truly one.

PRACTICAL APPLICATION

1. Let’s take time to grow in our knowledge of the doctrines of the Church during this holiday time.

2. Let’s seek to relate to the triune Godhead as we seek to be one.

3. Let’s seek to dedicate ourselves towards developing the oneness of the Church and not let anything affect it.
