Food That We Do Not Know Of

Let’s admit it. We all love to eat. Some of us can consistently eat throughout the day. It is a valid thing to want to eat. This can be seen in how the disciples of Jesus sought to find food for the Lord Jesus at noontime as it was written in the text of John 4. However, our Saviour was not concerned about feeding His stomach. There was a greater “food” that was feeding His soul. When the disciples brought back bread to Jesus, they were quite surprised that He had spoken to a Samaritan woman. They asked Him to eat and this was His reply.

“I have food to eat of which you do not know.”
John 4:32

The word “know” in Greek means to have full knowledge. The Lord had “food” that He could eat which the disciples do not have perfect knowledge about. He Himself ate of this spiritual food that both fed Him and drove Him on. It was a food that goes beyond mere physical food. The disciples’ lack of understanding concerning what this “food” deeply affected them. The Lord Jesus was being greatly nourished by this “food” so much so that He could forgo eating physical food.

The Example Of Jesus In Being Driven To Do The Will Of God

“My food is to do the will of Him who sent Me and to finish His work.”
John 4:34

What was this food that the Lord Jesus was talking about? The Lord’s “food” was to delight in doing the will of the Father in soul-winning work. There was tremendous commitment from the Lord Jesus towards doing the will of His Father. He was deeply conscious that He was sent by God for this purpose. His whole life was geared towards the completion of God’s will with reference to His life’s purpose. The Lord Jesus was not distracted with his own personal need of hunger. He was able to rise above mere physical needs like eating so as to go towards fulfilling the greater purpose of God by reaching out to the Samaritan woman (John 4:14). This was what nourished and strengthened Him. His purpose was not just to start doing God’s will but to also finish it. In the text of Psalm 40:8, the Psalmist prophesied of how the Messiah would delight in doing the Father’s will. The law of God was within His heart. He would proclaim the good news of righteousness to all. Young people, is reaching out to lost souls also your delight in life? Let’s make doing the will of God and completing it our “food” too.

Stop Procrastinating

“Do you not say, ‘There are still four months and then comes the harvest’?”
John 4:35

The people during the times of Jesus would often say that there was still time before the harvest came. They kept procrastinating until harvest came and went and the people were too late to harvest the crop. The harvest is plentiful but the labourers are few (Matthew 9:37). There must be a greater sense of urgency in reaching out. The Lord Jesus challenged the disciples to really look at the harvest field and recognise that it was ready for harvesting. Young people, soon, the holidays will be over and it is time to take stock. Have you done what you needed to do? It is easy to plan to do something but never quite get down to completing it. Young people, let’s stop procrastinating. Let’s get down to preparing for our major exams. Let’s put in greater effort in reaching out to people. Let’s not delay in bearing witness to as many people as we can who still do not know the Lord Jesus.
