“For You Have Magnified Your Word Above All Your Name”

Praising God should always be done with the whole heart. With all that God had done for him, David could not help but give praise to the Lord with his whole inner being. He was a much older man by now when he wrote this psalm. Now he could see how God had magnified His word in such a way that it was above all His name.

“For you have magnified Your word above all Your name.”
Psalm 138:2

The Psalmist called God by many names: Lord of Hosts, God, Lord, King and more. Each name represents a special aspect about God. When the Psalmist exercised faith in the Lord’s word, He was able to experience great and wonderful things far greater than what he expected with regard to His name. The Lord had truly magnified His word above all His name. As such, we should praise the Lord with the whole heart.

Getting Down To Praising The Lord With The Whole Heart

1. Having A Depth Of Appreciation Of The Lord’s Way In Answering Prayers

“In the day when I cried out, You answered me,
And made me bold with strength in my soul.”

Psalm 138:3

The Psalmist cried out to the Lord in his great time of need. He exercised faith in the Lord in prayer. And He heard and specially answered his prayer. For God to answer our prayer is already an awesome thing. And yet God’s ways are such that He does more than what we expect. He does not just deliver us; he makes us bold with strength. He will perfect and complete all things with regards to our life (Psalm 138:8). Let’s have a depth of appreciation and gratitude to God for His wonderful ways.

2. Thinking And Being Concerned For Others

“All the kings of the earth shall praise You, O Lord,
When they hear the words of Your mouth.”

Psalm 138:4

David was now King over all the land. He would sing praises to God before all the kings. His commitment was to declare the word of God with his whole heart to others because he thought of how others would be affected by what he would say. When he does this, people would perhaps take notice, respond and exercise faith in God. When they experience His wonderful ways, they too will praise the Lord. Let’s learn to think of others. Let’s do our very best in declaring the Lord’s word that they too might praise God.

3. Personal Choice To Respond To God With The Whole Heart

“I will praise You with my whole heart”
Psalm 138:1

“Before the gods I will sing praises to You.”
Psalm 138:1

Let’s get down to practising praising the Lord with the whole heart. Our challenge is to fill our heart with the Lord and His love and appreciate them. May we not allow any distraction to fill our heart so much so that we cannot respond with fullness of heart in praise to God. Let’s choose to sing to the Lord with joy and hope in our heart. This is how we should bear witness for the Lord. Let’s determine in our heart to give sincere and joyful praise with our whole being.
