The Psalmist’s Commitment To Doing God’s Will

There is nothing that pleases God more than when His servants do His will. In the text of Psalm 40, the Psalmist had experienced how the Lord had brought him out of the “miry clay” and set him on a “rock”. The Lord had answered his cry for help because he had learnt to trust in Him. So with a heart of gratitude, he sought to do the will of God. King David knew that the Lord was not focusing on the outward expressions of worship such as burnt offerings and sacrifices. He knew that obeying God and humbly doing His will was what pleased Him the most (1 Samuel 15:22).

1. Discovery Of God’s Will

“My ears You have opened …
In the scroll of the book it is written of me.”

Psalm 40:6, 7

The Psalmist sought to discover the will of God. He knew he could discover the Lord’s will for his life in the Scriptures. Young people, let’s also seek to discover the will of God for our lives from the Scriptures. May God open our ears to comprehend His will.

2. Determination To Do God’s Will

“Behold, I come”
Psalm 40:7

There was a deep sense of determination within his heart to do the will of God. He was going to take this step of faith in committing himself to do His will even though it may be tough at times. We, too, need this determination within our heart to do this.

3. Delight To Do God’s Will

“I delight to do your will, O my God,
And Your law is within my heart.”

Psalm 40:8

There must also come joy in doing the will of God. There is this unique and special enjoyment that comes from doing our Father’s will and in hiding His precious and living word within our hearts.

4. Declaration To Do God’s Will

“Then I said …”
Psalm 40:7

The Psalmist declared this commitment to all who would read and listen to this psalm. He did not keep quiet about this. He boldly declared his delight to follow God’s word and commandments.

Following The Example Of The Lord Jesus In Doing God’s Will

“Therefore, when He came into the world, He said …”
Hebrews 10:5

“Then He said, ‘Behold I have come to do Your will, O God.'”
Hebrews 10:9

David’s words inscribed in Psalm 40 had also a prophetic element. The Lord Jesus would also personally declare these words from the text of Psalm 40:7-8. The writer of Hebrews emphasized twice that the Lord also declared His commitment to do the will of God. The word “said” in the text of Hebrews 10:9 is in the perfect tense. The Lord Jesus had declared these words some time ago and the effect of it continues. In other words, the Lord Jesus did not just state that He delighted in doing God’s will. He actually got down to doing it and finishing it. Young people, let’s learn from the example of the Lord in speaking of doing the will of God and getting down to doing it.
