Praying For “Help”

We all need to pray for help in life. It is only natural for us to do so when the going gets tough. My heart goes out to all who are now taking “O” and “A” levels exams. There are also those in the university who are working on their never ending list of essays, projects and also preparing for their coming exams. Yes, times like these should see us seeking help from the Lord. And yet, I have come to realise that I need the Lord’s help each day, not just in tough times. The reason is because I know how weak I really am. The context of the text of Hebrews 4 is one where the people of Israel were highlighted as an example of disobedience. They did not mix the hearing of the word of God with faith (Hebrews 4:2). There was a lack of a proper fear of God and His word and He judged them for this. We must realise how humanly weak we are and how easy things can go wrong quickly when we are too proud to pray. We all personally need the Lord to help us each and every day. What should cause us to pray for help even more?

1. The Knowledge Of The Lord Jesus As Our High Priest

“For we do not have a High Priest who cannot sympathize with our weaknesses, but was in all points tempted as we are, yet without sin.”
Hebrews 4:15

We believe in the Lord Jesus and He is our High Priest. No other person can intercede for us better than the Lord Jesus. He understands and feels with us concerning all our weaknesses. He knows how weak the human being can be and He intercedes for us for the best kind of help that we need.

2. The Prospect Of Finding God’s Mercy And Grace

“That we may obtain mercy and find grace to help in time of need.”
Hebrews 4:16

We pray for help because we have faith that God can really help us in times of need. He is the source of great grace and of great mercy. Grace is given because we are helpless and we are totally dependent on it. It is also out of the desperation of our circumstances and when we have nothing else left to plead with that mercy is given. Let’s learn to seek the Lord even more to find grace and mercy.

“Let Us…” Get Down To Seeking Help

1. Holding Fast To Our Faith

“Seeing then that we have a great High Priest, who has passed through the heavens, Jesus the Son of God, let us hold fast our confession.”
Hebrews 4:14

If we truly have a great High priest, who has gone to the heavens and intercedes for us, we should be deeply impacted by this. He is indeed the Son of God. Our challenge is to hold firmly to our confession of faith. Let’s seek to have certainty of faith in Christ and God even as we pray.

2. Confidently Coming Before God’s Throne Of Grace

“Let us therefore come boldly to the throne of grace, that we may obtain mercy and find grace to help in time of need.”
Hebrews 4:16

Our challenge is to pray even more with this boldness that God does hear our prayers. It is up to us to make the choice to come before His throne of grace. God’s throne is one that is characterised by great grace. Let’s choose to plead for the Lord to be merciful and gracious not just during challenging times but as an everyday thing. The Lord God will not let us down. Let’s determine to come to the Lord’s throne of grace even more.
