In Awe Of A Most Glorious King

God is our most glorious and awesome King. From the beginning of time, God is and will always be our sovereign Lord and Ruler. We should always stand in awe of Him. There are no limits to the stupendous glory of His attributes. In the text of Psalm 24, David sought to describe the various aspects of His glory as King.

1. The Glory Of Our King’s Power As Creator

“The earth is the Lord’s, and all its fullness,
The world and those who dwell therein.
For He has founded it upon the seas,
And established it upon the waters.”

Psalm 24:1-2

Our powerful King marvelously created the world and all its inhabitants. The world and its fullness is His kingdom. He has sovereignty over all the earth. The land and mountains were founded and established by Him upon the sea. David had knowledge of the creation of the world. He knew that the landmasses were founded on the larger expanses of the great oceans.

2. The Glory Of Our King’s Holy Presence

“Who may ascend into the hill of the Lord?
Or who may stand in His holy place?”

Psalm 24:3

The psalmist also saw the glory of the holiness of God. He raised the question of who can come into the holy presence of the Lord. The hill of God was a reference to Mount Zion where the tabernacle was. This was His holy place. If God’s holy presence was there at a place, it would also be considered holy. Do we also sense God’s holy presence when we come to His house?

3. The Glory Of Our King’s Victory In All Battles Of Life

“Who is this King of glory?
The Lord strong and mighty,
The Lord mighty in battle.”

Psalm 24:8

The Lord God is also seen as a triumphant King in battle. The Lord had demonstrated to David the many times He had gone into battle and won wars for him. He is seen as a victorious King, full of glory, riding into the city for a victory parade. Our King can also be victorious in all the battles of our life.

Appropriate Responses

1. Seeking His Presence With Pure And Sincere Lives

“He who has clean hands and a pure heart,
Who has not lifted up his soul to an idol,
Nor sworn deceitfully.”

Psalm 24:4

If we want to seek to be with the Lord, our part is to come before Him with a cleansed and pure heart. God looks at our heart and our deeds. He sees whether we are pure and sincere in following Him. He wants to see whether we are true to Him in what we say and whether we would be faithful to Him. When we do so, He will bless and grant us His righteousness.

2. Giving All Praise And Glory To The Lord As Our King Of Glory

“The Lord of hosts,
He is the King of glory.”

Psalm 24:10

If God is truly our victorious King over all the earth, let’s give Him all the glory. Let us, like David, extol Him as our King of glory. Let’s honor Him with reverence and fear.
