A CALL TO GIVE THANKS TO GOD FOR HIS GREAT MERCIES

Offering grateful thanks to the Lord for His infinite mercies should feature so much more in our life. When we recognize and realize to a greater degree how He has been most merciful to us, the heart should be overflowing with gratitude and joy.

The Psalmist wrote a psalm of thanksgiving where the enduring mercies of God are specially highlighted. He made a call to all to be grateful to the Lord who alone is great and merciful.

“Oh, give thanks to the Lord, for He is good!
For His mercy endures forever.”
Psalm 136:1

These are the Lord’s wonderful attributes. The Lord is indeed good and His mercy is everlasting. The phrase “His mercy endures forever” is written 26 times. It is obvious that the Psalmist wanted his readers to be deeply grateful for the great mercies of God. They were to be specially moved and humbled by the extent of it.

THE DEMONSTRATION OF THE LORD’S ENDURING MERCIES

The Lord’s mercies undergird many things in life. It has been such since the creation of the earth till today. Truly His mercy endures forever.

1. THE ENDURING MERCIES OF GOD DEMONSTRATED IN GREAT WONDERS

a. In creation (Psalm 136:4-9).

b. In Biblical History:

i. In the deliverance and leading of the people of Israel (Psalm 136:10-16).
ii. In the conquering of the promised land (Psalm 136:17-22).

2. THE ENDURING MERCIES OF GOD DEMONSTRATED TODAY IN OUR LIVES

a. The Lord remembers our lowly estate (Psalm 136:23).

b. The Lord rescues us from our enemies (Psalm 136:24).

c. The Lord provides food for all flesh, both humans and animals (Psalm 136:25).

ENDING ON A NOTE OF THANKSGIVING FOR HIS GREAT MERCIES

“Oh, give thanks to the God of heaven!
For His mercy endures forever.”
Psalm 136:26

The Psalmist began his psalm with exuberant thanksgiving. He also ended it on a note of thanksgiving. There was this deep gratitude to God for His everlasting mercies from creation till today and beyond.

On a personal note, I am also deeply thankful to God for His great mercies in life and ministry. This Youth Walk article is going to be my last one. I will be moving on to ministering at the YAG level from this weekend onwards and thus, will not continue writing Youth Walk. It has been my personal joy and privilege to learn under Pastor Charles in my writings and to discover the Lord God in a deeper way.

Let’s end this last Youth Walk on a note of thanksgiving to the Lord. We are deeply humbled by the mercies of the Lord extended to us all these years. Who are we that the Lord would grant us His great mercies! He is a great and almighty God and we are but lowly beings, yet, He remembers us and sustains us in all our endeavors Let’s seek to give thanks to the God of heaven for His mercies. Let’s seek to always have a heart of gratitude and thankfulness for His blessings in our lives.
