The Problem Of Ending Up With A Heart Of Unbelief

Responding well to God at a point of time does not assure that we will always do so. The people of Israel responded to God with a good heart when He spoke to them at Mount Sinai. They were determined to fear Him and to keep His word. The Lord wished that they would have such a heart forever (Deuteronomy 5:29). However, they did not continue with such a heart. They ended up with a heart of unbelief.

“Because they did not believe in God,
And did not trust in His salvation.”

Psalm 78:22

When they faced problems in the wilderness, they did not believe that God could deliver them. They had seen how God had done great signs and wonders in Egypt and yet they doubted His salvation. They ended up with a problem of unbelief.

Reasons For Ending Up With A Heart Of Unbelief

How did Israel end up with a heart of unbelief?

1. They Did Not Set Their Hearts Aright

“A generation that did not set its heart aright.”
Psalm 78:8b

They did not have right hearts before God. When they sinned, they did not set their heart aright. They did not prepare their heart to follow the Lord and His ways. They had a wrong heart before Him. They were not faithful in keeping His commandments.

2. They Did Not Remember The Works Of God

“And forgot His works
And His wonders that He had shown them.”

Psalm 78:11

They did not remember what God had done for them. They had forgotten all the signs and wonders that Lord had done in the land of Egypt. How easy it is for people to forget all that God has done.

Preventing The Problem Of Unbelief

“That they may set their hope in God,
And not forget the works of God,
But keep His commandments”

Psalm 78:7

Young people, we are meant to set our hope in God. The next generation must take the time to recall what He has done for us. When we appreciate all that God has done, our faith will help us to keep His word. Let’s seek to prevent this problem of unbelief from affecting us. Let’s battle unbelief and set our hope in the Lord always.
