The Corrupting Problem Of Sin

Sin creates dilemmas that are not easily resolved. It is a problem that persistently affects and corrupts our lives when we do not seriously deal with it. Sin causes us to wander from the Lord’s righteous commandments.

“Let me not wander from Your commandments!”
Psalm 119:10

When sin dominates our lives, our moral strength ebbs and we stray from the ways of the Lord. Young people, we must fight this problem of sin in our lives. If not, sin will persist in its corrupting work within us.

Three Aspects With Reference To Fighting The Problem Of Sin

1. The Purifying Aspect – Taking Heed Of God’s Word

“How can a young man cleanse his way?
By taking heed according to Your word.”

Psalm 119:9

The word of God is a powerful entity. It has the power to cleanse our lives and change us. Our challenge is to take heed of the word of God. “Taking heed” means that we will listen well to the word of God taught and preached. We will take God’s word seriously and seek to obey it. When we do this, the word of God will purify and sanctify our lives.

2. The Preventive Aspect – Hiding God’s Word In Our Hearts

The fight against sin is not over with just “cleansing”. We must also have the strength to say “No” to sin. We can prevent ourselves from sinning by hiding the word of God in our lives.

“Your word I have hidden in my heart,
That I might not sin against You.”

Psalm 119:11

When we memorise and meditate on the word of God, it will deter us from transgressing against Him. The precious word, when embedded in our hearts, will influence and lead us to flee from temptation and to pursue that is which is holy and righteous. Let’s consciously seek to hide God’s word in our hearts. Let’s take time to memorise the word of God till it is a part of our life.

3. The Prayer Aspect – Praying For Deeper Understanding

Last but not least, we must pray that God will give us a deeper understanding of His word.

“Blessed are you, O Lord!
Teach me Your statutes.”

Psalm 119:12

We must pray that the Lord will illumine our minds and hearts to the truths of His word.

“I will meditate on your precepts,
And contemplate Your ways.”

Psalm 119:15

We should take the time to remember and to ponder over the word of God. If we want to take God’s word seriously, we ought to meditate on the ways of the Lord so much more. With greater understanding, there will come greater strength to fight the problem of sin. Let’s endeavour to pray for greater perception of God’s word so that we overcome the powerful nature of sin.
