Praying In The Light Of Spiritual Warfare

Whether we are conscious of it or not, there is the undeniable fact of a great spiritual battle that is being waged between the kingdom of God and the kingdom of Satan. We fight a deadly and invisible enemy who is merciless and will do all he can to hurt our life. Our challenge is to be strong and to stand against the forces of evil by putting on the armour of God (Ephesians 6:10-17). In the light of this, Paul challenged the Ephesian church to specially pray.

1. Learning To Pray More And Deeper

“Praying always with all prayer …”
Ephesians 6:18

The challenge is for us to learn to pray a bit more than we are used to. There are times when we need to go beyond just making normal prayers to heartfelt petitions and cries to God in times of need. Let’s learn to go deeper in our prayer life. Let’s learn to engage in greater prayer effort.

2. Letting The Spirit Lead Us To Pray

“… and supplication in the Spirit …”
Ephesians 6:18

The Spirit of God is also involved in prayer. He will lead us to supplicate in prayer for people. In order to understand how to wield the sword of the Spirit, we need Him to guide and lead us. The Holy Spirit will enlighten our understanding as we pray (Ephesians 1:17). He will strengthen our inner man as we pray (Ephesians 3:16). Young people, let’s learn to supplicate for people in the realm of the Spirit.

3. Seeking To Watch And Pray

“… being watchful to this end with perseverance …”
Ephesians 6:18

Prayer is also about being watchful. The word “watchful” means to be “awake” and “alert”. We are to stay vigilant against the attacks of the evil one. Our challenge is to remain strong for the Lord as we stand against the evil one and his forces. This can be achieved through watching and praying to the Lord. Let’s learn to persevere and be steadfast in the doing of these things.

4. Being Concerned Enough To Pray For Our Fellow Saints

“… and supplication for all the saints”
Ephesians 6:18

Last but not least, let’s learn to have a deep concern for our fellow Christians as we pray. We are meant to have a heart big enough to pray for all the saints. We would take the time to pray for those who are in need. Will Leong and his siblings have just lost their father. They are going through a time of grief. Let’s specially remember them in prayer that the Lord would help them to be strong. Let’s pray for Jerrie Jiang as she just completed her bone marrow transplant. Let’s also remember those who are taking their “O” and “A” levels exams. Let’s learn to supplicate for our fellow brother and sisters in Christ in their time of need.
