Dealing With The Corrupting Nature Of Sin

Sin corrupts. It creates within us an impetus to do that which is increasingly wrong and base. The Psalmist understood that sin can cause a young person to wander away from the commandments of God (Psalm 119:10). Just like a sheep that strays, we too can easily stray from the word of God when we allow sin to take the better of us. Sin also causes us to actually forget about God’s word (Psalm 119:16). It takes away our memory of truths that we have learnt from His word before. When we sin against God, there is a corrupting power that causes us to feel unclean before Him. Young people, we need to deal with our sins by placing the word of God within our lives.

The Challenge To Delight In God’s Word

The challenge is to find great delight in God’s word rather than in sin.

1. Taking Heed To The Word Of God

“By taking heed according to Your word.”
Psalm 119:9

A young man can cleanse his ways by giving the highest regard to the word of God. He must give great attention to the Scriptures and follow it so that his ways can change for the better.

2. Hiding God’s Word In Our Heart

“Your word I have hidden in my heart”
Psalm 119:11

This young man would also take the time to memorise the word of God until it dwells within his heart. There is a need for us to hide God’s word in our heart so that it will prevent us from sinning.

3. Whole-Hearted Prayer With Regards To God’s Word

“With my whole heart I have sought You;
Oh, let me not wander from Your commandments!”

Psalm 119:10

The Psalmist also saw how prayer made a difference as he interacted with the word of God. He prayed with his whole heart that he would not stray away from the word of God. Do we pray with the truths of Scripture in mind?

4. Meditating On God’s Word

“Ï will meditate on Your precepts,
And contemplate Your ways.”

Psalm 119:15

The Psalmist also determined to meditate on the Lord’s precious words. He would muse and contemplate the ways of the Lord through His word. He would dwell on God’s word again and again until His word became a part of him. Let’s ponder deeply the ways of the Lord through His word.

Finding A Great Sense Of Joy In The Word Of The Lord

“Ï have rejoiced in the way of Your testimonies,
As much as in riches.”

Psalm 119:14

As the Psalmist sought to make the word of God part of his life, he found a great sense of joy and delight in it. He experienced great joy in the ways of His truth. In fact, the degree of his joy in the ways of God’s word was the same with reference to enjoying the riches of life. Young people, let’s make the word of God an integral part of our lives so that we can rejoice greatly in it.
