THE REASONS FOR CONDUCTING OURSELVES WELL IN GOD’ S HOUSE

God’s house is not our house. We cannot do whatever we want in His house. Bethany belongs to the Lord God Almighty and how we behave as His servants and members of the church matters to Him. Paul challenged Timothy that he should know how to conduct himself well in His house.

“How you ought to conduct yourself in the house of God, which is the Church of the living God, the pillar and ground of the truth.”
1 Timothy 3:15

The word “conduct” in the Greek means to behave. Behaving properly is something we ought to do each time we come to the house of God. Why should we conduct ourselves well?

1. BECAUSE IT IS THE CHURCH OF THE LIVING GOD

The word “Church” in Greek had the idea of being a group of people that has been called out of this world. We belong to a living God and we should be conscious of Him. He calls us out of darkness into His kingdom of light. We ought to conduct ourselves well before this God.

2. BECAUSE IT IS THE PILLAR AND GROUND OF TRUTH

Truth is what makes the Church stand. We should never compromise on it. The Church should be built on the pillar and foundation of God’s word. It is where we proclaim and teach truths from His word. Our conduct should reflect what it means to practise truth (Matthew 7:24).

THE WAY TO CONDUCT OURSELVES WELL IN GOD’S HOUSE

“These things I write to you … I write so that you may know how to conduct yourself in the house of God”
1 Timothy 3:14-15

“These things” that Paul was referring to were the things that he had already written about. What were some of “these things”?

1. LOVE FROM A PURE HEART

“Now the purpose of the commandment is love from a pure heart …”
1 Timothy 1:5

When we apply the truth of the word of God in our life and keep His commandments, there would be the cleansing of our heart. There will come forth from the heart a love that is true and pure. Loving our neighbour as ourselves is the fulfilment of the commandments (Romans 13:9-10).

2. HAVING A GOOD CONSCIENCE

“… From a good conscience …”
1 Timothy 1:5

The challenge for us is to also seek to have a good conscience. A good conscience would help us discern between what is true and false. We would be able to stand against falsehood.

3. HAVING SINCERE FAITH

“… And from sincere faith.”
1 Timothy 1:5

Another thing that we should have is an unhypocritical faith. We would be sincere in all that we do in faith. Young people, let’s seek to conduct ourselves with a faith that is genuine and earnest.
