The Coming Of Our Lord Jesus Based On Prophecy From The Scriptures

The Lord Jesus is coming again. It is a future reality that is based on prophecies from the Scriptures. And yet, there are those who seek to discount this prophetic truth. During the times of Peter the apostle, false teachers sought to disregard the Lord’s second coming by stating that they were based on cleverly devised fables.

“For we did not follow cunningly devised fables when we make known to you the power and coming of our Lord Jesus Christ, but were eyewitnesses of His majesty.”
2 Peter 1:16

Peter sought to refute such an approach. The Lord’s first coming was based on prophecies from the Old Testament that were totally fulfilled by Him. Peter and others saw with their own eyes the fulfilment of prophecy when they beheld the Lord’s majesty. He sought to also make known this wonderful truth of the Lord’s second coming to his fellow Christians, which is also based on prophecies from the Bible.

Having The Highest Regard For Prophecies

“Knowing this first, that no prophecy of Scripture is of any private interpretation, for prophecy never came by the will of man, but holy men of God spoke as they were moved by the Holy Spirit.”
2 Peter 1:20-21

What was foremost on Peter’s mind was for the people to have the highest regard for prophecy in the Scriptures. It was crucial for the brethren to know the prophetic word did not originate by the will of man. Its source of origin was not man. Instead, these sacred words came through the superintending work of the Holy Spirit. The Spirit of God moved holy men of old to preach and to write down the Lord’s words. Our challenge is to give the highest regard for the prophetic word.

Having The Prophetic Word Confirmed To Us

“And so we have the prophetic word confirmed”
2 Peter 1:19

After seeing how the Lord had fulfilled Old Testament prophecies concerning His first coming, Peter declared of they had absolutely no doubt in the infallibility of the prophetic word. There was a great sense of certainty in the prophecy concerning the Lord’s second coming. There was this continuous sense of surety that Christ’s impending return is not a fable but an unrealised fact of the future. May we have deep assurance and hope in the promise of the Lord’s second coming.

Heeding As A Light In A Dark Place

“Which you do well to heed as a light that shines in a dark place, until the day dawns and the morning star rises in your hearts”
2 Peter 1:19

Peter challenged the brethren to take heed to the prophetic word. They were to receive the Lord Jesus’s promise of His second coming in the best way possible. The prophetic word, when treasured and held fast, will be like the dawning of a new day. It will bring both light and hope to the heart. As we continue to take heed to it, the word will shine even more brightly until there is fullness of understanding and hope within our heart. Let’s seek to always take heed to the prophetic word and hope in it.
