The Great Example Of The Lord Jesus In Humbling Himself

There is no greater example than the Lord Jesus when it comes to the concept of servanthood. He showed to us what it meant to become a truly humble servant of God as He came to earth to be with us.

1. The Emptying Aspect

“But made Himself of no reputation”
Philippians 2:7

Even though the Lord Jesus was in essence the same as God, He was willing to empty Himself of all the privileges of being the eternal Son of God so that He could greatly humble Himself to be one of us. He denied himself of all that He had in heaven to come to this world of hate and wickedness. What a great example of humility!

2. The Doulos Aspect

“Taking the form of a bondservant, and coming in the likeness of men.”
Philippians 2:7

The Lord was co-existing with God in His divine form and yet, He chose to take on the form of a bondservant. It was already humbling for Jesus to just be a man. And yet the Lord took on the form which was considered one of the lowest occupations with reference to being a man … a slave (Doulos means Slave in Greek). He did not come to be served but to serve (Matthew 20:28). Because He was so great and mighty in heaven, it takes a whole lot on the part of the Lord Jesus to become a bondservant to serve His Father and men. Can we also learn to take on the form of a bondservant?

3. The Obedience Aspect

“He humbled Himself and became obedient to the point of death, even the death of the cross.”
Philippians 2:8

The Lord Jesus greatly humbled Himself so as to be obedient to His Father’s will till death. Even though He had to die a cruel death on the cross, He fully submitted to the will of the Father. Humility is about submitting to God and obeying Him despite what we have to go through. Let’s seek to obey the will of the Father till the very end of our life.

Given The Name Which Is Above Every Name

“Therefore God also has highly exalted Him and given Him the name which is above every name, that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow … and that every tongue should confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.”
Philippians 2:9-11

Because of His obedience, the Lord Jesus was given a name that was beyond measure. His name had been highly exalted and there is no other Lord as our Lord. God had given Him a name that is far above any other name. In the text of Ephesians 1:21, Paul wrote also that the Lord God raised Jesus from the dead and seated Him at His right hand in the heavenly places.

“Far above all principality and power and might and dominion, and every name that is named, not only in this age, but also in that which is to come.”

The Lord Jesus is far above all governing authorities and power. He is the greatly exalted one. Let’s rejoice in the salvation that the Lord has given us. Every knee will bow before this great Lord one day. Let’s seek to honour the great name of the Lord and to give glory to it.
