When Our Trust In God Is Shaken

The kind of trust we have in God is often seen when we are tested in life. King David learned to exercise trust in Him. However, relying on an experience in the past may not be enough as he faced new challenges in life. There was a terrible situation in his life that brought about the writing of these words.

“How long O Lord?
Will You forget me forever?
How long will You hide Your face from me?
How long shall I take counsel in my soul”

Psalm 13:1-2

The Psalmist was obviously shaken as his doubts and emotions got the better of him. He began to question whether God had already forgotten him when there was no answer to his prayers. Our trust in God can also be shaken when we face persisting problems in our life. Young people, are you going through persisting problems in your life? Are you struggling with doubts and is your heart in an emotional turmoil?

Praying For Enlightenment To See Beyond Problems

“Consider and hear me, O Lord my God;
Enlighten my eyes;
Lest I sleep the sleep of death;
Lest my enemy say, ‘I have prevailed against him'”

Psalm 13:3-4

When we cannot see beyond our predicaments, the challenge for us is to pray for enlightenment. It is God who can give us wisdom and spiritual understanding from His word to understand the challenges of life. Our part is to exercise faith by asking Him to show us a way out of our difficulties. David asked God to enlighten his eyes lest his enemies prevail against him. There was a deep sense of urgency in seeking the Lord for illumination. May our hearts be encouraged to seek for this light in the midst of our darkness. In the text of Psalm 18:28, David prayed again for this enlightenment.

“For You will light my lamp;
The Lord my God will enlighten my darkness.”

Psalm 18:28

When the Lord gives us light, we can see things in a different perspective. We see things from His perspective. We must ever seek to have enlightened trust in God.

The Challenge To Have A Greater Trust In God

“But I have trusted in Your mercy;
My heart shall rejoice in your salvation.
I will sing to the Lord,
Because He has dealt bountifully with me.”

Psalm 13:5-6

With God’s enlightenment, His mercies will ring out loudly. It will stand out as we face the challenges of life. There will come a renewed trust in the multitude of His mercies. The Psalmist with this enlightened trust in God was able to find joy in Him. With trust, he was able to rejoice in the Lord’s salvation. He was able to see how the Lord had delivered him on many occasions in the past. His focus was now on the Lord. He determined to offer praise to the Lord because His bountiful blessings were on him. Once he could not see beyond his problems, but with enlightenment, he was able to exercise trust once again in the Lord’s great mercies. Let’s learn to have greater trust in God’s abundant mercies as we face the challenges of life.
