Being Guided by the Lord

THE WISE MEN BEING GUIDED BY THE LORD

One of the amazing things about the story of the wise men was the way the Lord God led them. They were specially guided by Him in their search for the Lord Jesus. They came from the East and were specifically led to the Christ Child. This is truly wondrous. How was this done?

1. THROUGH DIRECT DIVINE GUIDANCE

There was the Lord’s direct divine involvement in leading the wise men. It was through a special star that He revealed to them the birth of the Christ Child. They were able to recognize Him as the divine King of the Jews and also for the Gentiles. It was this particular star that led the wise men in their search for the Messianic King.

2. THROUGH THE SCRIPTURES

Another way that the Lord led the wise men was through the Scriptures. The wise men had made the mistake of allowing themselves to be guided by their own human wisdom and reasoning. They thought that the Lord Jesus, the King of the Jews, would be born in a palace in Jerusalem. It was there that they were guided by the Scriptures to go to Bethlehem. And there, they found the Christ Child and they worshipped Him.

BEING WARNED BY THE LORD

“Then, being divinely warned in a dream that they should not return to Herod, they departed for their own country another way.”
Matthew 2:12

1. BEING LED BY A DIVINE WARNING

The Lord God also led the wise men through warnings. After their worship of the Lord Jesus, the Lord guided the wise men again through divine instruction. Herod the King had asked the wise men to return to him so that he could find out where the Child Jesus was and his evil intention was to go and kill Him. It was through a dream from the Lord that the wise men were divinely warned to not go back to Jerusalem. They were to urgently choose another path to return to their home country. The Lord had to intervene to prevent them from making another mistake.

2. CHOOSING TO OBEY THE WORD OF THE LORD RATHER THAN THE WORDS OF A KING

They came from their own country asking about the King of Jews in Jerusalem. They were now returning home quietly with wisdom. They obeyed the words from the Lord God rather than the words of a human king. They took heed to the divine warning.

PRACTICAL APPLICATION

1. THE LORD’S GUIDANCE TODAY

Today, the Lord God does not guide us through supernatural means like directing us through dreams. However, He does guide us through the Scriptures.

A. THROUGH THE KNOWLEDGE OF THE SCRIPTURES

Knowledge of God and His will are revealed through the preaching of His word. We can gain understanding and guidance for our lives through listening and learning from the word of God each week at Youth Worship.

B. THROUGH THE WISE TEACHING AND COUNSEL FROM PASTORS, SUNDAY SCHOOL TEACHERS, AND THOSE WHO FEAR THE LORD

i. Learning words of wisdom from the word.

ii. Learning words of warning from the word.

Our part is to learn and respond well to words of wisdom and warning from the Scriptures.

2. PERSONAL OBEDIENCE

We are to exercise faith in the Lord’s word and to take heed to its warnings. Let’s seek to honour the Lord by choosing to obey His word and His guidance from it. Let’s seek to follow the Lord and His word with humility.
