“All Scripture …”

THE PROPER VIEW OF THE SCRIPTURES

Young people, we all need to have a high view of the word of God. In a world of scepticism and falsehood, many have sought to diminish or discount the authenticity and authority of the Scriptures. The apostle Paul had written a verse to defend the inerrancy of God’s word. He had a high view of the Bible. Paul wrote these words to Timothy to emphasise this:

“All Scripture is given by inspiration of God …”
2 Timothy 3:16

Every part of Scripture is “God-breathed”. It has been divinely inspired by the Lord God Himself. The Lord used human authors with their own distinctive style to write truths in the Scriptures. And yet, the words written were inspired by the Lord. Peter also explained how the word of God did not come by the will of man but holy men of God spoke “as they were moved by the Holy Spirit” (2 Peter 1:21). The Scriptures are totally inerrant and trustworthy.

THE PERSONAL BENEFITS OF KNOWING THE SCRIPTURES

“… And is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness …”
2 Timothy 3:16

There are great benefits in reading and knowing the Scriptures.

1. FOR DOCTRINE

These are the right things that we need to know and believe in with reference to God and His truths. These doctrines from Scripture are meant to guide us in all things.

2. FOR REPROVING OF OUR LIFE

The word of God is also meant to be used to rebuke a person when he is going the wrong way. This person needs to be reproved and admonished in order for him to realise his sins and faults.

3. FOR CORRECTION IN ALL THINGS

The Greek word for “Correction” has the idea of correcting something by making it straight. It is to rectify that which is wrong. The Scriptures can be used to correct and help a person go the right path.

4. FOR INSTRUCTION IN RIGHTEOUSNESS

The Greek word for “instruction” has the idea of chastening a person. It is to help train a person to walk in righteousness. This is the work of discipline. As a father chastens his son, even so the Lord chastens us that we may grow further and produce the peaceable fruit of righteousness (Hebrews 12:5-11). Young people, we need to be instructed and chastened in order that we may walk in the ways of righteousness.

THE END RESULTS OF KNOWING THE SCRIPTURES

“… That the man of God may be complete, thoroughly equipped for every good work.”
2 Timothy 3:17

1. BEING A MAN OF GOD

Paul was challenging Timothy to be that man of God that he was meant to be.

2. BEING A MAN OF GOD WHO IS COMPLETE

The man of God is meant to be spiritually mature in all things. It is the word of God that can help a person grow and mature as Christians. We are meant to also grow towards spiritual maturity.

3. BEING MAN OF GOD THOROUGHLY EQUIPPED FOR EVERY GOOD WORK

The man of God must also seek to be fully furnished for the work of the Lord. We can be specially trained and be effective in every area of work. The challenge is to be fully equipped to serve the Lord in ministry. Young people, let’s seek to grow towards maturity through knowing the Scriptures well. Let’s seek to learn and be guided so that we can be fully trained for every good work.
