A close walk with God

Each day, we must endeavour to walk with the Lord diligently. It includes reading the Lord’s Word and praying to Him. These spiritual disciplines are good practices. But can we speak of having a deep sense of closeness with God? Let us consider how close we are in our walk with the Lord.

David wrote of having a deep and close relationship with God in Psalm 16. There were different ways in which David expressed his closeness with God in this Psalm, and one way was to see the Lord as his portion.

God as the portion of our inheritance

“O LORD, You are the portion of my inheritance and my cup; You maintain my lot. The lines have fallen to me in pleasant places; yes, I have a good inheritance.” (Psalm 16:5,6)

Physical inheritance

  1. Israel
    • God provided the promised land to Israel as their inheritance.
    • He gave each tribe a “lot” of land according to the “lines” that were drawn.
    • The larger tribes were given larger parcels of land.
  1. David
    • David was the last in line in his family’s inheritance.
    • He was often forgotten, in favour of his older brothers.
    • But God led him to become a mighty king with great successes in numerous wars.
    • By receiving the spoils of war, he accumulated a vast wealth.
    • He acknowledged that he had “a good inheritance”.

Spiritual inheritance

  1. But far more importantly, David saw the Lord as the portion of his inheritance and cup.
  2. This focus on the Lord as his spiritual inheritance mattered much more than his physical inheritance.
  3. As his inheritance, the Lord had been a great blessing to David.
    • As his “cup”, the Lord provided for all his needs (Psalm 16:5).
    • God maintained his “lot”, giving sustenance to him (Psalm 16:5).
    • iii. God was his counsel (Psalm 16:7).
    • God’s presence was at his right hand (Psalm 16:8).

Closeness with God

How does keeping the Lord as his spiritual inheritance express closeness with Him?

  1. David regarded the Lord as precious and dear.
  2. He treasured and loved Him above all physical things.
  3. David sought to set the Lord always before him, seeking His leading (Psalm 16:8).
  4. He deeply appreciated Him by blessing and rejoicing in Him (Psalm 16:9).

Let us be challenged to choose the Lord as our spiritual inheritance. Let us treasure Him as we learn to draw closer in our walk with Him. Let us not be distracted by the material things of life. Let us rejoice and praise the Lord for blessing us as our spiritual inheritance.
