The call to worship the Lord in His presence

It is indeed a special privilege for us to enter into the presence of the Lord. Yet how conscious are we of His presence as we enter into His holy sanctuary to worship Him?

The Psalmist gave a call to come before the presence of the Lord and to worship Him…to give thanks to Him, “Let us come before His presence with thanksgiving;” (Ps 95:2) Worship in His presence also involves singing praises to the Lord and to shout joyfully to the Rock of our salvation. (Ps 95:1,2)

Even though we may be worshipping in the fellowship hall temporarily at this time, let us be challenged to heed the call to enter the Lord’s presence and to offer our worship to Him.

The awesome greatness of the Lord

What should our focus be when we come before the Lord’s presence? Our focus should be nothing less than His awesome greatness. His greatness is to be seen in a number of ways.

  1. He is great as He is God. “For the Lord is the great God,” (Ps 95:3) As God, He is divine and all powerful. By nature of who He is, the Lord is the great God.
  2. He is great as He is our sovereign King. “And the great King above all gods.” (Ps 95:3) God is the greatest of all Kings…who rules over all. His sovereignty is unmatched.
  1. He is great as He holds all the earth in His hands. “In His hand are the deep places of the earth; the heights of the hills are His also. The sea is His, for He made it; and His hands formed the dry land.” (Ps 95:4,5) Our Lord created all things and they all belong to Him. He holds all the earth in His hand. What a great God we have!

There is no one as great as our God. His presence is truly great and awesome.

Humbling ourselves before our great God

What should our response be in the presence of our great God? The Psalmist calls for all to humble ourselves before God, “Oh come, let us worship and bow down; let us kneel before the Lord our Maker.” (Ps 95:6) To bow and knee are acts of humility before our great Lord and Maker. While we may not bow physically in worship as a church, we should humble our spirits in God’s presence each time we worship Him. Let us be challenged to stand in humble adoration of our God.

The challenge to obey the voice of the Lord

As the Lord is our God and Shepherd and we are His people…His sheep (Ps 95:7), our response must be to obey Him. The Psalmist wrote, “Today, if you will hear His voice: “Do not harden your hearts, as in the rebellion, as in the day of trial in the wilderness,” (Ps 95:7,8)

If we truly have experienced being in the presence of the Lord, then we would be challenged to obey the Lord as His people and as His sheep. Today, this passage continues to be applicable to us. If we hear the voice of God through His word each day, we should not harden our hearts and rebel, but to be obedient to the Lord’s Word. Let us be challenged to respond as we come into the presence of the Lord, to hear His voice and to be obedient to His ways.
