The Seasons Of Life

A concept of time

An essential aspect of life is time. Time is a concept for us to understand, especially from the standpoint of God. King Solomon sought to understand this time concept when he wrote Ecclesiastes. Let us have a good and proper understanding of time.

The seasons of life

“To everything there is a season,” (Eccl 3:1)

God designed time in different seasons. There is a time for everything. Let me highlight some of these seasons that the author wrote about, “A time to be born, a time to die; a time to plant, and a time to pluck what is planted;” (Eccl 3:2–8) Time governs many things, and we need to use our time well and wisely. For instance, there is a time for us to be born and a time for us to die. Time governs these seasons for us. How we use our time in-between is up to us. The challenge is to use our time well; if not, we will waste it.

Sense of purpose

“A time for every purpose under heaven” (Eccl 3:1)

In the seasons of life, God has a purpose for us. We must seek to understand our purpose before time passes us by. God is still sovereign in the midst of these different seasons of life. He has determined His purpose for us. On the one hand, it does take time for us to discover our purpose in life. On the other hand, we recognise how limited our time is. Let us be challenged to understand God’s purpose for us amidst each season of life.

God-given task

“What profit has the worker from that in which he labours? I have seen the God-given task with which the sons of men are to be occupied.” (Eccl 3:9–10)

One thing that we want to discover for ourselves is the God-given task for each one of us. What is the God-given task that He wants us to be occupied with? All of us have a task to fulfil. In the first chapter, Solomon wrote of having a burdensome task. (Eccl 1:13) However, in this third chapter, he wrote it as a God-given task. His perspective had changed. It was no longer a burdensome task but instead a God-given task. Let us be challenged to discover this God-given task.

The beauty of it all

“He has made everything beautiful in its time. Also He has put eternity in their hearts, except that no one can find out the work that God does from beginning to end.” (Eccl 3:11)

The beauty of it all is not seen in one or two things. It is seen in everything. This is a process that does take time. It is only over time, years, that we see the beauty that God designed for us, His purpose and the task that He has given to us.

We may not fully understand all things. Eternity is something that all of us cannot fully understand. Man with his finite mind cannot fully comprehend that which is eternal. It is indeed something awesome when God puts eternity in our hearts. As we seek to understand the work of God from beginning to end, we can only submit in humility that we cannot fully comprehend it. We only know that His work will always turn out beautiful. Let us be challenged to have absolute trust in the work of God in our lives that He will make all things beautiful in His time. Let us be challenged to use our time well to fulfil His purpose and His task for us on this earth.
