A profound prayer made

The prayer that the Lord Jesus made for all believers is one that is truly profound. The Lord Jesus understood how difficult it was for different people with various personalities to be one. He knew this all too well with His disciples who were all vying to be the greatest.

Yet it was His purpose in prayer to pray for oneness…for His disciples and for all believers. The kind of oneness that He prayed for was the kind that He and His Father had. That is truly amazing. In that the Lord prayed for this, we should believe that there is every possibility for it to be fulfilled.

The profound difference oneness makes

It is crucial for us to have this oneness as it would truly make a difference. As the Lord Jesus prayed His intimate prayer to His Father, He also highlighted the profound impact that oneness could make.

1. Reflecting the glory of the Lord

“And the glory which You gave Me I have given them, that they may be one just as We are one:” (John 17:22) The Lord Jesus prayed that the glory that He received from His Father will be given to us. This glory of the Lord is seen in the oneness that we have. When we are able to be one despite the difficulties that may come, the glory of the Lord is manifested as we are believers of the Lord. This is something most profound, that we can bear the glory of the Lord…the glory of being one.

2. Impact on the world

Our oneness can impact the world. The Lord Jesus prayed, “That the world may believe that You sent Me.” (John 17:21) The oneness that we have as believers can be seen by the world. The glory of the Lord is manifested. And people would be able to recognise that this oneness is due to our being in the Lord Jesus. They would be able to see the Lord Jesus and believe that He has been sent by God, “And that the world may know that You have sent Me, and have loved them as You have loved Me.” (John 17:23) They would also be able to see the love that the Lord has for them. Let’s recognise the impact oneness can make on the world. It can bring people to faith.

3. Becoming perfect in one

“I in them, and You in Me; that they may be made perfect in one,” (John 17:23)

This was an amazing thing that Jesus prayed for. As the Lord Jesus is in us, then we may be made perfect in one. What a profound possibility for us who have such faith in the Lord Jesus! We can all become perfect in one. You may be wondering…as I initially did…how possible this really is? Yet if it were not possible, the Lord would not have prayed for it. It is for us to have the faith to believe that this is indeed possible and for our God to bring it to pass…even in our church. Do we believe that we can be perfect in one in Bethany? The answer must be “Yes!” As we prepare ourselves for the 20th YAG Retreat, let’s come appreciating how profound this oneness is  and the difference that it can make on us as a church and on the people around us.
